Academy of Experts

The Academy of Experts is a professional body for expert witnesses in the UK and worldwide. The “Useful Cases” section under “Resources” on its web site contains notes on selected UK and US cases of relevance to experts and mediators. Access to the searchable online register is free, though registration is required.

Acronym Finder

Acronym Finder claims to provide the world’s largest and most comprehensive searchable database of acronyms, abbreviations and initialisms.

Advocate

Advocate (formerly the Bar Pro Bono Unit) matches barristers prepared to do pro bono work with those who need their help. Its web site provides information about the work of the unit, and registration forms for barristers wishing to volunteer. The members’ area of the site provides information about available cases.

Advocates Library

The Advocates Library (the library of Scotland’s Faculty of Advocates) is the largest legal practitioners’ library in Scotland. The web site provides details of library services and access to the online catalogue. Also searchable from here are the catalogues of the National Library of Scotland and the Signet Library.

American Bar Association

The American Bar Association is a voluntary association of lawyers and law students, and this is its main web site, providing information and news relating to the legal profession in the United States. Information on legal education, admission to the bar and how the courts work may be found in the “Topics & Resources” section, or in the “Legal Resources for the Public” section which is accessible from the foot of any page. There is also a link to the separate web site of the monthly ABA Journal, where articles from 2004 onwards may be accessed.

Anglo-American Legal Tradition

AALT is an ongoing project based at the University of Houston, Texas. The site contains digitised images of medieval and early modern documents in the National Archives of England, focusing on major legal series from the late 12th century to 1800. Additional content includes some on-site guidance on reading the documents, and links to online palaeography and medieval Latin tutorials on the National Archives web site.

Annotated Justinian Code

This annotated English translation of the Codex Justinianus, on the web site of the University of Wyoming College of Law, was made by the late Justice Fred H. Blume of the Wyoming Supreme Court. A translation of Justinian’s Novellae (Novels) is also provided.

Ask

Ask is a general purpose search engine designed to respond to questions posed in everyday language as well as to single word or phrase searches.

Association of Costs Lawyers

The Association of Costs Lawyers (ACL) is the professional body for costs lawyers (formerly known as law costs draftsmen) in the UK. Its site includes information on the role, education and training of costs lawyers, a directory of members and news items. Some content is only available to members and/or registered subscribers.

Avalon Project

A collection of full text documents in law, history and diplomacy, including documents up to the present time. Many documents of significance in world history are included, though United States documents predominate from the 17th century onwards. The site is produced by the Lillian Goldman Law Library at Yale Law School.

Bank of England: Statistics

The Statistics area of the Bank of England’s web site has an extensive range of monetary and financial data. This includes information on base rate changes since 1970, which is available in various different formats in the Interest and Exchange Rates Data section.

Bar Council

The Bar Council (more formally the General Council of the Bar) is the governing body and Approved Regulator of the Bar of England and Wales. Its web site has information on the Bar’s history, organisation, regulation and training, and there are also links to the Bar Council’s “Ethics and Practice Hub” web site and the Direct Access Portal.

Bar Directory

The Bar Directory is now accessed via the Juriosity web site.

Bar of Ireland

The Bar of Ireland is the governing body for barristers practising in the Republic of Ireland. The web site provides information on its regulatory, representative and educational roles, and on the Law Library, which in the absence of a tradition of barristers’ chambers in Ireland functions as the Irish Bar’s central working location. There is a fully searchable database of Irish barristers, information on the complaints and disciplinary procedures, and other general information on Ireland’s courts system.

Bar Standards Board

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers called to the bar in England and Wales. Established in January 2006, it took over the regulatory function which had hitherto been carried out by the Bar Council alongside its representative work. Site content includes the BSB Handbook; the Barristers’ Register (of all barristers authorised to practise in England and Wales and holding a current practising certificate); information on requirements for qualifying as a barrister, including training and pupillage; and a section “Complaints and Professional Conduct”. This last includes information on the fitness to practise, complaints and disciplinary tribunal processes, and published disciplinary findings October 2002 onwards.

Bar Tribunals & Adjudication Service

The Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service (BTAS) is responsible for appointing and administering disciplinary tribunals for barristers in England and Wales facing charges of professional misconduct, and Inns’ Conduct Committee panels dealing with admission and disciplinary matters concerning student members of an Inn or applicants for admission. It was set up by the Council of the Inns of Court (COIC) at the request of the Bar Standards Board and became operational from 1 February 2013. Its web site includes policy and guidance documents, annual reports, newsletters, and details of both completed and forthcoming hearings.

Barrister

The Barrister is an independent magazine, published quarterly, which is aimed at barristers practising in the UK. Articles 2003 onwards are available via the “Archived Articles” menu.

BBC News

The BBC’s news site, providing frequently updated news from the UK and around the world. The “Business” section has current market information.

BIALL – British & Irish Association of Law Librarians

BIALL was formed in 1969 and is the only professional body to represent and serve information professionals working with legal information in the UK and Ireland. It organises training events and conferences and has an active publishing programme. Its web site contains news of interest to the profession, diaries of events internal and external, the BIALL Blog (May 2007 onwards), and links arranged by subject. The BIALL How Do I? wiki was launched in June 2009. This is a wiki created by the BIALL PR Committee with the aim of helping users with legal information enquiries.

Bing

Microsoft introduced its Bing general search engine in 2009. Searches may be restricted to the UK, and there are over 40 language options.

Bloomsbury Professional

Bloomsbury Professional is a law and tax publisher, with offices in England, Ireland and Scotland, which was known as Tottel Publishing before its acquisition by Bloomsbury Publishing plc in 2009. Its publications include books, journals, newsletters, looseleaf services, and separate Ireland and Scotland lists. There is an online catalogue that can be browsed by subject, and an online ordering facility.

Bodleian Law Library

The Bodleian Law Library is part of Oxford University and is the library of the university’s Faculty of Law. Its web site provides information about library services and access to Oxford University library catalogues: see SOLO: Search Oxford Libraries Online. Search results can be refined in order to display Bodleian Law Library holdings only.

Boston University School of Law: The Year Books

The Year Books, precursors of modern law reports, are the principal source materials for the development of legal doctrines in the English courts from the late 13th century to 1535. Many have been printed, but others remain in manuscript form only. The database on this site, compiled by Professor David J. Seipp of Boston University, provides a searchable index to and paraphrase of printed Year Book reports. Also on the site is a list of old printed editions of Year Books, a list of manuscripts with locations, and an annotated bibliography of over 80 articles and books about the Year Books.

British History Online

British History Online was created by the Institute of Historical Research and the History of Parliament Trust. It is a digital library, mostly free of charge, containing some of the core printed primary and secondary sources for the medieval and early modern history of the British Isles. Freely available content of legal and parliamentary interest includes Raithby’s Statutes of the Realm of the period 1628-1701, the full text of Acts and Ordinances of the Interregnum 1642-1660, edited by C.H. Firth and R.S. Rait (3 vols, 1911), and some early volumes of the House of Lords and House of Commons Journals. Subscription is required for access to some content including Calendars of State Papers.

British Standards Online

The British Standards Institution (BSI) is the UK’s national standards body. This section of the BSI’s site provides a bibliographic, citation and full text database of over 90,000 British and international standards documents. Searching for British Standards and viewing search results is free to all. Those who register are able in addition to view summaries and to order hard copy documents online. Unlimited online access to British Standards in full text is available only to subscribers.

Cambridge University Press

The major academic and reference publisher Cambridge University Press has an extensive law list. The Law section of the online catalogue (accessed via the Academic link) is arranged primarily by legal topic. The site includes search and online ordering facilities.

Canadian Bar Association

The Canadian Bar Association (CBA) is a voluntary professional organisation whose members include approximately two thirds of all practising lawyers in Canada. Freely accessible site content includes an archive of press releases 2008 onwards, information on facilities available to members, and a searchable database of CBA members. Articles from the CBA’s official journal Canadian Bar Review, 1923 onwards, and the monthly magazine National, 2012 onwards, are also available.

Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations

Extensive legal abbreviations index, with coverage concentrated on English language legal publications from the British Isles, the Commonwealth and the United States, together with selected major foreign language publications. The emphasis is on law reports and legal periodicals, with the addition of some legislative publications and major textbooks. The index can be searched from title to abbreviation, as well as from abbreviation to title.

CCBE

The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) acts as the liaison between the European Union and Europe’s national bars and law societies. The Documents section of its web site includes the CCBE’s Code of Conduct for European Lawyers as well as national codes of conduct, reports from committees looking at various topics and subject areas, and position papers. The News section includes recent newsletters and press releases.

Chambers and Partners

Online version of Chambers and Partners, the evaluative directory of solicitors, barristers, law firms and chambers, with sections covering UK solicitors and barristers, as well as lawyers in the USA, Europe, Canada, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America.

Chambers USA

Online version of Chambers USA, the evaluative guide to leading lawyers and law firms in the USA, researched and published annually in May by UK publisher Chambers and Partners.

Charity Choice: Find a Charity

Searchable database providing contact details and short descriptions of aims and activities relating to over 160,000 charities in the UK. Search options include sector, name, location, and charity registration number.

Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys

The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) is the professional and examining body for patent attorneys (also known as patent agents) in the UK. Its site includes a searchable register of patent agents; an overview of the law of patents, trademarks, industrial designs and copyright; and briefing papers (aimed at IP professionals) on matters of current interest.

Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys

The Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (CITMA) is the professional body for trade mark attorneys and trade mark and design litigators in the UK. Freely accessible content (there is also a members only section) includes CITMA’s Royal Charter and bye-laws, recent annual reports, the Institute’s journal CITMA Review (formerly ITMA Review) 2010 onwards, a News section, and a search tool for finding chartered trade mark attorneys.

CILEx Regulation

CILEx Regulation (formerly ILEX Professional Standards) is the independent regulator of members of CILEx (the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) and of certain other individuals who are not members of CILEx but who have practice rights in the legal sector. Site content includes the CILEx code of conduct and various other codes and rules; a directory of disciplinary records; and a link to the directory of CILEx authorised practitioners on the CILEx web site.

CILEx: Chartered Institute of Legal Executives

The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) is a professional body representing around 20,000 members. Its web site includes a searchable directory of legal executives, annual reports 2003 onwards, press releases 2008 onwards, the CILEx Code of Conduct, and information about education and training. The CILEx Journal is available October 2015 onwards.

Clipsearch

Clipsearch is a chargeable service (subscription or pay-as-you-go) which enables users to search the NLA (Newspaper Licensing Agency) database of electronic newspaper clippings from over 140 UK national and regional newspapers, and to obtain newspaper stories in the same format as they originally appeared in print. Coverage is generally from 2006 onwards, though some publications have a later starting date.

Companies House

Companies House, an executive agency of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, carries out a number of functions, including registration, relating to limited companies and company records in the UK. Basic company information, forms and guidance documents are accessible free of charge in this section of the GOV.UK web site. More detailed information and a range of other services are available as subscription services.

Competition Law Review

Competition Law Review is a refereed online journal published twice a year from 2004 onwards by the Competition Law Scholars Forum (CLaSF), an organisation which aims to promote competition law scholarship in the UK, member states of the EU, and states which may accede to the EU. All issues to date are available to download free of charge.

Costs Lawyer Standards Board

The Costs Lawyer Standards Board (CLSB) is the Approved Regulator of costs lawyers in England and Wales. Documents accessible on its site include the costs lawyers’ Code of Conduct, Practising Rules, and Disciplinary Rules & Procedures. There is a searchable register of costs lawyers who hold a current practising certificate and are therefore regulated by the CLSB.

Council for Licensed Conveyancers

The Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) is the regulatory body for licensed conveyancers in England and Wales. The Consumer Information section of its web site includes a searchable directory of licensed conveyancers and details of complaints procedures. The CLC’s Handbook is available for download.

Court and Tribunal Finder

The Court and Tribunal Finder on the GOV.UK site provides an alphabetical listing of all courts and probate offices in England and Wales and all tribunals in England, Wales and Scotland. It includes information on each court’s and tribunal’s address and facilities, opening hours, contact details, how to get there, and type of work (eg civil, family). There are also options which allow for searching by area of law and postcode and by name or address of a court or tribunal.

Courts and Tribunals Judiciary

This is the web site of the Judicial Office, which provides support to the judiciary of the courts of England and Wales and of the non-devolved tribunals of the UK. “About the Judiciary” includes lists of the senior judiciary, circuit judges, district judges and others. “You and the Judiciary” includes forms of address, the Guide to Judicial Conduct, and information for litigants in person. The “Announcements” section provides press releases, announcements of appointments and retirements, and transcripts of speeches made by the senior judiciary 2010 onwards, with earlier coverage available via an archived version of the site. “Judgments” includes selected judgments and sentencing remarks December 2011 onwards. “Publications” includes statistics, practice statements, protocols and guidance, and judicial responses to government proposals. Legal term dates 2016 onwards and published decisions of the First-tier Tribunal and Upper Tribunal chambers are available via links at the top of the page.

Debrett’s Forms of Address

The publisher Debrett’s produces works of reference including guides to the British peerage and to manners and social etiquette. This section of its web site provides guidance on addressing people with titles, and a summary of the correct forms of address for members of the main professions, including the legal profession.

Dictionary.com

The main search options on this site are Dictionary and Thesaurus. Sources for the dictionary entries include the Random House Unabridged Dictionary and other dictionaries by American Heritage and Harper Collins. Thesaurus entries are from Roget’s Thesaurus.

Direct Access Portal

The Direct Access Portal (DAP) is the Bar Council’s searchable portal for locating and contacting direct access barristers – barristers who can offer services directly to the public without a solicitor having been instructed. It also provides access to mediators and arbitrators.

Discovery

Discovery is the catalogue of the National Archives. Besides those of the National Archives themselves, it covers records in over 2,500 archives and institutions across the UK, and a small number of archives and institutions abroad. It has integrated and replaced several formerly separate services and web sites including the National Register of Archives (NRA), the ARCHON Directory and Access to Archives (A2A).

DOAJ

DOAJ is the Directory of Open Access Journals, a project which aims to increase the visibility and ease of use of free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. It includes basic information on and links to over 500 legal journals from jurisdictions worldwide, and is searchable by either journal or article.

DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo is a general search engine which doesn’t track users or tailor its search results to a user’s search history.

Eagle-i Internet Portal for Law

Eagle-i is a portal, developed by the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, linking to worldwide legal information sources on the Web. Coverage includes UK, European, foreign, comparative and international law. The database can be searched, with options available to filter the search by country, resource type, or organisation.

Early English Laws

Early English Laws is an ongoing project to publish online and in print new editions and translations of all English codes, edicts and treatises from c.600 up to the time of Magna Carta (1215). Additional site content includes a group of contextual essays, bibliography, glossary and links.

English Medieval Legal Documents Database

This is a collaborative database of the published sources of English medieval legal documents, with links to online sources. Coverage dates are 600 to 1535, with an emphasis on sources published since 1950. It is produced by the University of Southern California Gould School of Law and the Asa V. Call Law Library, and aims to provide an update to the classic bibliographies of English law published by W. Harold Maxwell, Joseph H. Beale and Percy H. Winfield.

Ethics & Practice Hub

The Bar Council’s Ethics & Practice Hub provides guidance for barristers on ethical issues, as well as guidance on issues relating to information technology and data protection, equality and diversity, international practice, and remuneration.

European Commission: Library and e-Resources

As well as ECLAS, the union catalogue covering the European Commission’s Central Library and around twenty-five smaller specialised libraries, this site also includes a link to the Europe Direct site where there is a directory of European Documentation Centres (EDCs) and Europe Direct information centres (EDICs) in EU member states.

European Journal of Current Legal Issues

Formerly titled the Web Journal of Current Legal Issues, the EJoCLI is an open access refereed journal covering legal issues in judicial decisions, law reform, legislation, legal research, legal information and related topics. It is currently edited at the Lancaster University School of Law. Issues 1995-2012 are held on the BAILII web site and readily accessible there via a link. Issues 2013 onwards are available on the EJoCLI site.

European Journal of Law and Technology

The European Journal of Law and Technology (EJLT) is a refereed open access journal published up to three times a year 2010 onwards and featuring articles, discussions and reviews relating to IT law and applications. A link is available to the journal’s predecessor, the Journal of Information, Law and Technology 1996-2009. The journal began as part of the Electronic Law Journals collaborative project between the University of Strathclyde and the University of Warwick.

Expert Witness Institute

The Expert Witness Institute (EWI) is an independent non-profitmaking body which services, supports, trains and educates experts. Site content accessible to non-members includes EWI’s Code of Professional Conduct and several articles.

Explore the British Library

Explore the British Library replaces the British Library Integrated Catalogue and permits integrated searching of both the catalogue and the Library’s web site. Users may also request photocopies or loans of items. Registration (free) is advised for the purpose of ordering.

Faculty of Advocates

The Faculty of Advocates is the professional body for the Scottish Bar. Its web site provides information on the office-holders and organisation of the Faculty and on education and training for advocates. The membership directory can be searched by individuals’ names or specialisms: select “About Advocates”. The Faculty’s Guide to Professional Conduct can be downloaded from the “Professional Standards” page, also within “About Advocates”.

Faculty Office

The admission and regulation of notaries in England and Wales is a function of the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Notaries section of its web site has a collection of the rules regulating notaries, a code of practice for notaries, and a searchable directory of notaries practising in England and Wales.

Famous Trials

Famous Trials is a resource compiled by Douglas O. Linder of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School, originally intended for his own students. It presents materials (text and images) relating to celebrated trials from many historical periods. With the obvious exception of the earliest cases, the trials selected took place in the United States. Linder provides edited transcripts of evidence and judgments, related press coverage, biographies of key participants, and bibliographies.

Financial Times

The Financial Times newspaper is essentially a subscription site, although by registering it is possible to view up to three articles in a thirty-day period.

FLAG Foreign Law Guide

The FLAG database provides a gateway to foreign, international and comparative law collections held within UK university and national libraries, and within major practitioners’ law libraries. The database is searchable in several ways and includes descriptions of each collection and links to the web catalogues of contributing libraries. The development of the FLAG project was financed by the Research Support Libraries Programme and managed by Dr Peter Clinch. It is based at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Library, University of London.

GlobaLex

GlobaLex provides online guides to international, foreign and comparative law research. The site’s four sections are International Law Research (guides to over 25 topics), Comparative Law Research, Foreign Law Research (guides to over 100 countries), and Tools for Building Foreign, Comparative and International Law Collections. The guides include commentary, bibliographies and links to online resources, and are written by subject librarians and faculty staff from universities and other institutions from around the globe. The site is produced by the Hauser Global Law School Program (HGLSP) at the New York University School of Law.

Google Maps UK

Interactive online maps which can be manipulated by dragging, zooming and panning. Businesses and other locations, including for example courts, with their addresses, can be searched for within the selected area. Other functions include satellite images, street views and a route planner. Although the home page of this UK site is centred on the British Isles, detailed maps for much of the rest of the world are also accessible.

Google News

Google News collates articles from the last thirty days from more than 4,500 English language newspapers and other media sources worldwide. The headlines are selected by a computer algorithm without human editorial intervention. The stories are arranged such that one can easily see how various news services are treating each one.

Google UK

Google’s quick and simple search engine is the most widely used in the western world. Select “Advanced search” from the results page for a template-based expert search including over 40 language options and the option of restricting the search to web sites from a particular country or region. Many other Google services are accessible from the head of any page, including Google Maps and Google Scholar.

Government Legal Department

The Government Legal Department (formerly the Treasury Solicitor’s Department) provides legal services to government departments and other publicly funded bodies, and collects and manages bona vacantia on behalf of the Crown. Its section of the GOV.UK web site includes lists of the Attorney General’s panel of counsel, and a variety of publications. A link is provided to the separate Bona Vacantia section of the web site.

Guardian

The Guardian newspaper carries news items and features on legal issues most days (see News>UK>Law), although it no longer publishes law reports. The Law section of this online version is accessible at theguardian.com/law. The site’s free archived content goes back to September 1998. There is also a subscription-based Digital Archive of the entire newspaper extending back to its foundation in 1821.

Guernsey Bar

The Guernsey Bar web site provides information primarily on the profession of advocate in Guernsey, together with basic information on Guernsey’s legal system. Readily accessible content (there is also a members’ only area) includes contact information for Guernsey law firms and a glossary of legal terms.

Hart Publishing

Hart Publishing, based in Oxford, is an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing. Established in 1996 as an independent and privately owned publisher of legal journals, textbooks, scholarly monographs and practitioners’ books, it was acquired by Bloomsbury Publishing in 2013. The online book catalogue is arranged primarily by topic and there are options within each topic to browse new and forthcoming titles or the full list. The site includes search and online ordering facilities.

HG.org: Bar Associations

This section of the HG.org site (formerly known as Hieros Gamos) provides a worldwide directory of bar associations and law societies, arranged primarily by continent or region. There are links to web sites in some cases, otherwise contact details are given.

Hong Kong Bar Association

The Hong Kong Bar Association (HKBA) is the professional organisation of barristers in Hong Kong. As well as general information about the Hong Kong Bar aimed at the public, its website features the code of conduct, information on admission and pupillage, events, Bar List, and rules and regulations of the Association.

In-House Lawyer

The In-House Lawyer is a quarterly journal published by Legalease Ltd and aimed at in-house counsel of the UK and EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa). Content freely available on its web site includes articles from recent issues, a collection of Legal Briefings 2009 onwards, and recent press releases.

Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales

The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting (ICLR) is a not for profit organisation, established in 1865, that is the authorised publisher of the official series of The Law Reports for the Superior and Appellate Courts of England and Wales. It was registered as a charity in 1970. In addition to The Law Reports, it publishes several other series including Weekly Law Reports and Industrial Cases Reports, and also provides the free online service WLR Daily Case Summaries, which previews cases before they appear in printed form.

Independent

The Independent newspaper, which since March 2016 has appeared in digital form only, frequently has in-depth coverage of legal topics, but stopped publishing law reports some years ago, and there is no dedicated law section on its web site. There is a free archive from 1992 onwards.

Infolaw

Infolaw is a UK legal web gateway developed and maintained by legal publishing consultant Nick Holmes. Its Lawfinder Legal Resources section includes links to over 100,000 legal documents and resources, including listings by subject and country, legislation and case law, government and court sites, civil and family procedure updates, and chambers and law firm sites. Full access to Lawfinder content and features requires registration (free). Other information and materials including forms and precedents are available via a subscription service.

Infolaw: Lawfinder

Content within the “Lawfinder” section of the Infolaw legal research portal site includes listings of solicitors’ firms, barristers’ chambers, and providers of ADR and legal advice services. “The Directory” lists a wide variety of public and non-profit organisations.

Informa Law

Informa Law is an imprint of the academic publisher Routledge which focuses on practitioners’ books in areas that include maritime, commercial, dispute resolution, insurance, construction and transport law. The site features new and forthcoming titles as well as sector lists.

Inner Temple Library

The Inner Temple Library web site provides access to the online catalogues of all four Inns of Court libraries and details of Inner Temple Library services. Other notable features include FAQs relating to legal research, a virtual Library tour, slideshows of the Library present and past, and illustrated histories of the Library and the Inner Temple more generally. The Library’s Current Awareness weblog, added to daily and with a fully indexed archive extending back to April 2007, is accessible via a link on the home page.

Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Library

The IALS Library’s primary function is to serve a national academic research community including particularly researchers of the law schools of the University of London. It also provides services to other communities including a large number of subscribing practising lawyers. The web site provides details of library collections and services and access to the online catalogue.

Intellectual Property Regulation Board

The Intellectual Property Regulation Board (IPReg) regulates the patent attorney and trade mark attorney professions on behalf of both the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA), which are Approved Regulators under the Legal Services Act 2007. Site content includes the single Code of Conduct which applies to all members of both professions, and separate registers of the two professions in the form of PDF documents.

International Law Office

The International Law Office provides information about legal developments from around the world via a free email subscription service. The web site also includes an archive of newsletter articles 1998 onwards which can be searched, or browsed by subject and country via the search results screen.

Internet History Sourcebooks Project

This project provides a wide-ranging collection of on-site historical texts, with some links also to resources elsewhere. It comprises three main sourcebooks (ancient, medieval and modern), plus several subsidiary sourcebooks and “special resources”. Two of the main sourcebooks, Internet Ancient History Sourcebook and Internet Medieval Sourcebook, include sections devoted to legal texts. For both of these legal sections there are direct links from the site’s home page, towards the bottom of the left hand menu under Special Resources. The project is located at Fordham University, New York, and edited by Paul Halsall.

Isle of Man Law Society

The Society is the regulatory and professional body for advocates in the Isle of Man, who combine the functions performed in England and Wales by barristers and solicitors. The site includes information on its history, role and functions. There is a searchable register of members both individually and by law firm. The Rules (previously Advocates Handbook) are accessible from the foot of almost any page.

Judicial Appointments & Conduct Ombudsman

The Judicial Appointments and Conduct Ombudsman (JACO) investigates complaints about the judicial appointments process and the handling of matters involving judicial discipline or conduct. This section of the GOV.UK site has information on how to make a complaint and recent annual reports.

Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland

The Board, which was created in 2002, recommends to the Scottish Ministers potential candidates for appointment to judicial offices in Scotland. Included within its remit are the offices of Senator of the College of Justice (Judge of the Court of Session or High Court of Justiciary), Chair of the Scottish Land Court, Sheriff Principal, Sheriff, Part-time Sheriff, Summary Sheriff and Temporary Judge, and judges of the Upper Tribunal and the First-tier Tribunal. It also sets the standards to be applied by Justice of the Peace Advisory Committees in the appointment of JPs. The appointments recommended by the Board are listed on the web site, as are current vacancies. “Resources” includes the criteria for judicial appointments generally, role profiles and FAQs. Publications include annual reports 2002-2003 onwards.

Judicial Appointments Commission

The JAC is an independent body set up by the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 to select judicial office holders in England and Wales. Its web site includes information about the selection process, news releases 2015 onwards, Annual Reports 2006 onwards, and a range of other publications.

Judicial Conduct Investigations Office

The Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO) handles complaints about the personal conduct of all judicial office holders in England and Wales and some judicial office holders who sit in tribunals in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It took over the responsibilities of the Office for Judicial Complaints (OJC) on 1 October 2013, operating under a new set of procedures, rules and guidance. The 2014 Judicial Discipline Regulations and associated rules are available as PDF documents, and leaflets, annual reports and other publications are also reproduced on the site.

Judiciary NI

This web site includes a list of the judiciary in Northern Ireland, information about the court structure and sitting dates, a judicial conduct and complaints section, information about judicial training, reports from the Civil and Family Justice Review, a database of judicial decisions and directions, and sentencing guidelines.

Judiciary of Scotland

The Judiciary of Scotland web site includes information about Scottish judges and the Scottish court system, summaries of selected judgments, responses to consultations, news, and press releases. In the “You and the Judiciary” section there is a glossary of the most commonly used legal terms in Scotland.

Juriosity

Juriosity is a legal directory and knowledge-sharing web site set up in partnership with the Bar Council of England and Wales. The Directory section of the site includes the Bar Directory and a database of law firms and individual solicitors, searchable by name, specialism and location. There is also a Knowledge Centre where lawyers and other legal experts can post articles and case notes.

Kluwer Law International

Kluwer Law International, part of the Netherlands-based global information services company Wolters Kluwer, specialises in the publication of English language international law titles. The site has downloadable catalogues, information on forthcoming titles, and a link “eStore” to its search and online ordering facility.

Law Society

The Law Society of England and Wales is the professional association and Approved Regulator of solicitors in England and Wales. Select “Find a solicitor” for access to the Society’s directory of solicitors. Search options include organisation or personal name, specialism and location. The “Support and services” section contains advice for solicitors, including a wide selection of practice notes, the “Practice areas” section provides news, advice and information about a variety of legal topics, and the “For the public” section provides brief guides to a number of common legal issues.

Law Society Gazette

The weekly Law Society Gazette is distributed free of charge to all solicitors in England and Wales with a current practising certificate. New content appears online in advance of the printed copy, and there is a searchable archive of articles, January 1994 onwards.

Law Society of Ireland

The Law Society of Ireland is the professional body for solicitors in Ireland. Its web site includes information on the structure and committees of the Society, a database of solicitors and firms, and a selection of recent news items. There is also a link to the web site of the Society’s Gazette, with a searchable archive 1997 onwards.

Law Society of Jersey

The Society is the governing body of lawyers practising as advocates and solicitors of the Royal Court of Jersey. Besides information on the organisation and activities of the Society, the site includes directories of individual members and of law firms, and the full text of the Society’s Code of Conduct.

Law Society of Northern Ireland

The Society is the professional and regulatory body for solicitors in Northern Ireland. The web site includes a summary of its regulatory framework and details of the complaints procedure. Downloadable publications include the Solicitors (Northern Ireland) Order 1976 as amended, the Solicitors Practice Regulations 1987 as amended, the Solicitors’ Accounts Regulations 1998 and 2014 and the Society’s journal The Writ April 2000 onwards. There is also a directory of solicitors’ firms in Northern Ireland, searchable by name of firm or solicitor, geographical location, or category of work undertaken.

Law Society of Scotland

The Law Society of Scotland is the governing body for Scottish solicitors. The “For Members” section contains advice, rules and guidance on many aspects of professional practice. Law Society of Singapore

The Law Society of Singapore is the representative body for all lawyers in Singapore. Its site provides information for and about the legal profession in Singapore, notably a directory covering individual lawyers, law firms, notaries public and commissioners for oaths; practice directions and circulars (in Members’ Library, requiring log-in); calendar of events; annual reports, 2013 onwards; and information on how to qualify and how to set up a legal practice (select “Running Your Practice”). Publications include the Society’s Law Gazette October 2017 onwards.

Law Society: Junior Lawyers Division

The Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) of the Law Society was launched in January 2008 to provide an independent voice for student members of the Law Society, trainees, and solicitors of up to five years’ post qualification experience. It includes news about JLD, and information about starting a career as a solicitor.

This section of the Law Society of England and Wales web site has information about the Law Society Library and its services. The online catalogue is accessible via a link to Library Search: In addition to the catalogue, users can search within “Common Queries”, which provides answers to a range of frequently asked questions and suggestions on where to look for a wide variety of legal information.

Lawbore

Lawbore is a legal portal produced by City Law School, part of the City University in London. It was developed by Emily Allbon, formerly its law librarian who is now a Senior Lecturer at the School. The site is aimed primarily at City Law School students but has a collection of links which may be useful to others interested in law.

LawCite

LawCite is an automatically generated international legal case and journal article citator which is being developed at AustLII with the collaboration of other members of the Free Access to Law Movement. Over 18,000 law report and journal series are currently indexed, and the database includes over six million cases and law journal articles from around the world. Emphasis is on common law countries but this is gradually being extended to include civil law jurisdictions. Decisions are searchable by citation, parties, court, jurisdiction and date, and search results include a link to the full text of the case where available, together with details of legislation cited, cases and articles cited, and cases and articles referring to the case.

Lawlinks

Lawlinks is maintained by the Library of the University of Kent to help students and others find their way around legal internet resources. The “Signposts” section provides briefly annotated links to freely available sites recommended as good starting points for legal research. These include both UK and worldwide links and a section devoted to specific legal topics.

LawWorks

LawWorks is the operating name of the Solicitors Pro Bono Group, a charity that aims to increase the availability of free legal advice to individuals and communities in need. Its web site includes recent news stories about the group and information for individuals, not-for-profit organisations, and for solicitors and volunteers.

Lay Observer for Northern Ireland

The Lay Observer oversees the complaint-handling function of the Law Society of Northern Ireland. The site includes information on the Lay Observer’s role, details of the complaints procedure, and recent annual reports.

Legal Ombudsman

The Legal Ombudsman scheme for handling complaints about providers of legal services in England and Wales came into operation on 6 October 2010. Site content includes the scheme rules, FAQs, news, consultations, guidance, annual reports, and topically arranged case summaries.

Legal Services Board

The Legal Services Board (LSB) became fully operational on 1 January 2010 as the single “oversight regulator” for the legal profession in England and Wales. It oversees those bodies designated Approved Regulators which directly regulate providers of legal services, including solicitors, barristers, legal executives, licensed conveyancers, patent and trade mark attorneys, notaries, costs lawyers and chartered accountants. The site includes background information on the creation of the LSB, a list of the Approved Regulators, FAQs, consultations, news and press releases.

LexisNexis

The UK book imprints of the LexisNexis publishing group, a division of Relx, include Butterworths and Tolley as well as some titles formerly published by Jordans and Family Law. The site’s Librarians section includes listings (updated monthly) of recently published and forthcoming titles, loose leaf releases, and major works such as Atkin’s Court Forms, Halsbury’s Laws and Halsbury’s Statutes.

Liberty Library of Constitutional Classics

This section of the Constitution Society’s web site provides the texts of a wide selection of classic books and other works and documents on constitutional government. These include for example Magna Carta, Hobbes’ Leviathan, Bentham’s Principles of Morals and Legislation, and selected works of Edward Coke. The latter comprise parts 1-3 of the Institutes and the 9th part of the Reports.

Library Hub Discover

Jisc’s Library Hub Discover is a union catalogue providing free access to the merged online catalogues of about 150 of the major research libraries in the UK and Ireland, including university libraries, the British Library, the National Libraries of Wales and Scotland, and specialist subject libraries. Note: This service replaced Copac and Suncat as from 31 July 2019.

Literary Encyclopedia

Scholarly encyclopedia, written by about 3,000 scholars and experts, covering the lives and works principally of English literary authors, as well as philosophers, musicians and artists. Some major non-English figures are also included. Other features of the site include an English style book and a glossary of literary terms. Some of the site content is free, but many features and functions are available only to subscribers.

LLRX: Legal Research

LLRX describes itself as an independent web journal which provides articles, research guides and other resources relating to legal practice, research and law firm management. Material can be browsed by subject, date and author via the ‘Archives’ menu option. The “International Legal Research” subcategory has articles and guides on international law topics and on researching the law in various countries and regions of the world.

LSE Library

The LSE Library, founded as the British Library of Political and Economic Science, is one of the largest libraries in the world devoted to the economic and social sciences. Its web site provides details of library collections and services and access to the online catalogue.

Malaysian Bar

The Malaysian Bar is the professional body for all lawyers in Malaysia. Its web site provides information on how to qualify as a solicitor/advocate in Malaysia, legislation governing the legal profession, practice directions, membership directory and news relevant to the profession.

Met Office

The Met Office is the UK’s national meteorological service. Its web site has extensive weather and climate information and news, including UK and world forecasts. There is a five year archive of news releases.

Metric Conversions

Metric Conversions is a UK based web site which provides an extensive range of online conversion calculators and tables. These include temperature, weight, length, area, volume, speed, time, angle, pressure and currency.

Money – Past, Present & Future

A guide to sources of information on the history of money and contemporary monetary developments, compiled by Roy Davies, a librarian (now retired) at the University of Exeter. The section “Current Value of Old Money” provides links to sources on changes in the value of money over time.

National Archives

The National Archives is the official archive of the UK government, responsible for looking after the records of central government and the courts of law and for making them as widely accessible as possible. It is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice. The site has an extensive range of research guides and other information, including an online catalogue (“Discovery”) containing more than 32 million descriptions of records. For archived digital government information, including archived “snapshots” of current and defunct government department web sites, click menu on the home page for the quick link to “UK Government Web Archive”.

National Rail Enquiries

Information on Britain’s national rail network, including rail maps, guidance on journey planning and ticket purchase, live departure and arrival boards, and details of current service disruptions and engineering works. There are links (from the foot of any site page) to the individual train operating companies, many of which have downloadable timetables. Select “Timetables” near the foot of any page for a link to the Network Rail site where the complete National Rail Timetable is available online. Under the “Travel abroad” tab there is information with links relating to train travel to Europe.

New Square Chambers: Term Date Calculator

This calculator can be used to determine the dates of the four sittings or “legal terms” of the Court of Appeal and the High Court of England and Wales in every legal year from 1972-73 to 2200-2201. There is also an informative “Historical Note on the Legal Terms”, reproduced from A handbook of dates for students of English history, edited by C.R. Cheney and Michael Jones (2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 2000).

Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission

The Commission was established in June 2005, as an independent public body under the Justice (Northern Ireland) Acts 2002 and 2004, to select and recommend candidates for judicial office in Northern Ireland. Contents of its web site include information on the appointments process, guides, minutes of Plenary Meetings and annual reports.

Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Ombudsman

The Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Ombudsman was established on 25 September 2006 under the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 to investigate allegations by applicants for judicial appointments of maladministration or unfairness on the part of the Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission, the Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service or the Lord Chancellor. The site provides details of the complaints procedure and annual reports.

Notaries Society

Notaries are the oldest branch of the legal profession in England and Wales, carrying out all types of legal work other than the conduct of litigation, but chiefly concerned with the authentication and certification of signatures and documents for use abroad. The Notaries Society web site includes basic information about notaries and qualification as a notary, and a searchable database of notaries.

OANDA

Comprehensive currency site containing a currency converter and several other free online currency tools including historical exchange rates. The currency converter covers all the world’s currencies and four metals, and historical exchange rates are searchable from 1 January 1990 onwards.

Office for National Statistics

The Office for National Statistics, the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority, is responsible for producing a wide range of economic and social statistics relating to life in the UK (including crime and justice), and for conducting the decennial population census. Information on its web site includes inflation tables (the Consumer Prices Index and the Retail Prices Index), trade figures, health statistics, and earnings and employment data.

Office for National Statistics: Inflation and Price Indices

Office of the Legal Services Complaints Commissioner

The Legal Services Complaints Commissioner was an independent government-appointed regulator who worked with consumers and solicitors to improve the complaint-handling function of the Law Society of England and Wales from 2004 to 2010. The Office closed on 31 March 2010 and its archived web site is available here on the National Archives site.

Ordnance Survey: Election Maps

This site, produced by Britain’s national mapping agency, features maps of the UK upon which administrative and electoral boundaries are marked, including those of local authorities, parliamentary and assembly constituencies, and European regions. Maps can be shown in a range of scales down to street level, and can be manipulated by zooming, dragging and panning.

Oxford University Press

The major academic and reference publisher Oxford University Press includes an extensive law list aimed at all levels of readership. The site’s Law section is arranged primarily by topic, with the facility to narrow down search results in various ways including by type (eg academic research, professional/practitioner), publication date and format (eg Ebook, looseleaf). There is an online ordering facility.

Pacific Exchange Rate Service

This site, hosted by the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia, provides current exchange rates but is designed primarily to provide historic rate data for academics and researchers. For the US dollar, Japanese yen, sterling and several major European currencies data extends back to 1971.

Paperboy

Paperboy is a gateway to over 11,500 newspaper web sites worldwide. To search only UK newspapers, select UK from the “World Newspapers” menu.

Parliamentary Archives

Parliamentary Archives is the official archive of the UK’s House of Commons and House of Lords. Its web site has information for prospective visitors and details of its collections and services. For information on parliamentary records and resources both current and historical which are available online, with links, select Online Resources.

Phone Book

BT’s free online directory enquiries service. Individuals can be searched by name and location; businesses by name and location or type of business and location. There is also information on UK and international dial codes.

Post Office

Information on all of the Post Office’s postal and other services, including access to Royal Mail’s online Postcode/Address Finder.

Prison Finder

Prison Finder on the GOV.UK site is an online directory of prisons in England and Wales. Information includes addresses, contact details, accommodation, operational capacity and visiting times. Search options include name, category and region.

Proceedings of the Old Bailey

The Old Bailey is the familiar name for the Central Criminal Court in London. This site contains a fully searchable digitised collection of all surviving editions of the proceedings of the court from April 1674 to April 1913, a total of nearly 200,000 trials. As well as transcripts of the text, there are digital images of the original printed page in many instances.

Public Bodies

Public Bodies is an annual directory published by the Cabinet Office which provides information on non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs) sponsored by the UK government. All editions from 1997 to the current one are available (1997 and 1998 directly, 1999 onwards as downloads) via this page on the GOV.UK web site.

Publications Office of the European Union

The Publications Office is the official publisher for the European Union. Its site allows official publications to be searched or browsed by subject, with links to the EU Bookshop. It also has links to online resources managed by the Publications Office, such as an online public access catalogue (OPac), and the EuroVoc multilingual thesaurus.

Queen’s Printer for Scotland

The Queen’s Printer for Scotland (QPS) delivers a range of services to the public, information industry and government relating to the publication and re-use of information produced by the Scottish Government. This work complements the policies managed by the UK National Archives. The QPS website provides guidance on re-use of public sector information and copyright. Annual reports are available from 2002 onwards (the first covering 1999-2002). Access to Acts of the Scottish Parliament (as enacted and as amended) and original versions of Explanatory Notes and Scottish Statutory Instruments 1999 onwards is provided via links to the Legislation.gov.uk site.

Queen’s Counsel Appointments

The present system of appointment of Queen’s Counsel came into effect in 2005-06. This site contains information and guidance for both applicants and assessors in the current competition, and has information about recent completed competitions including lists of successful applicants.

Regnal Years of English Sovereigns

Scottish Legal Complaints Commission

The Scottish Legal Complaints Commission (SLCC) was established on 1 October 2008, under the Legal Profession and Legal Aid (Scotland) Act 2007, to investigate complaints by members of the public about services provided by legal practitioners in Scotland. The site has information on the complaints process, the SLCC Rules, complaint forms, annual reports, news, and details of any current consultations.

Scottish Legal History: a Research Guide

This research guide, on the GlobaLex web site, covers Scottish legal history from the feudal period through to 1901. Both print and electronic references are listed, some with annotations. The author is Yasmin Morais, Cataloguing Librarian at the Mason Law Library, University of the District of Columbia. The guide was first published in 2008 and has been updated several times, most recently in March/ April 2021 to include sources on the 2014 independence referendum. All earlier versions are also accessible from this page.

Scottish Legal Services Ombudsman

Before 1 October 2008, when the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission (SLCC) was established, complaints about the way the Law Society of Scotland or the Faculty of Advocates had handled a complaint against a legal practitioner were dealt with by the Scottish Legal Services Ombudsman (SLSO). Annual reports 2000-2001 to 2007-2008 are amongst material still accessible on the SLSO site: since the abolition of the SLSO most other content has been removed.

Scottish Solicitors’ Discipline Tribunal

The Scottish Solicitors’ Discipline Tribunal (SSDT) is an independent body which deals with serious disciplinary issues, and certain other matters, concerning solicitors in Scotland. Its findings are accessible on the site in full text, December 2004 onwards, together with its procedural rules, annual reports 2009 onwards, and general information in the form of FAQs.

Search25 is funded by the M25 Consortium of Academic Libraries, a collaborative organisation with about 60 member institutions across the east and south east of England. The site provides a directory of member libraries, a search function covering the catalogues of over 45 member libraries, and a Union List of Serials (a search facility for the periodical holdings, including law report series) of the constituent libraries of the University of London, Imperial College London and the University of Westminster.

SOAS Library

The SOAS Library, library of the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies, develops and maintains significant legal collections relating to the countries of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East, and is particularly strong on customary law, Islamic law and the countries of the Indian sub-continent. Its web site provides access to the catalogue and details of library services.

Socialist Lawyer

Socialist Lawyer is the journal of the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers, published three or four times a year. The web site includes the complete text of most issues Winter 1986 to June 2016, in PDF format.

Society of Expert Witnesses

The Society of Expert Witnesses is an independent non-profitmaking body, run by expert witnesses for expert witnesses. Besides contact details, information on membership and news stories, there is a database of expert witnesses, but inclusion is only at the request of a member so it is not comprehensive.

Society of Legal Scholars

The Society of Legal Scholars (SLS), formerly the Society of Public Teachers of Law in Great Britain and Northern Ireland (SPTL), is a society for those involved in teaching law in a university or similar institution, or otherwise involved in legal scholarship. Its membership includes both academic and practising lawyers. The web site includes news and information relating to its activities, events and publications.

Society of Messengers-at-Arms and Sheriff Officers

Messengers-at-Arms are officers of the Court of Session whose work involves serving documents and enforcing orders of the court. Sheriff Officers have a similar role with regard to Scotland’s regional civil courts. The Society’s web site provides historical background to the two offices, its code of practice, complaints procedure and directory of members.

Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal

The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) adjudicates on alleged breaches of rules of professional conduct by members of the solicitors’ profession in England and Wales. Solicitors Regulation Authority

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has been the independent regulator of solicitors in England and Wales since January 2007. Solicitors’ Association of Higher Court Advocates

Telegraph

The Telegraph web site includes material from print editions of both the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph as well as web-only content. Although the newspaper no longer publishes law reports, it features extensive coverage of legal matters. Note that a small amount of content remains freely accessible, but the vast majority of news content and comment is marked “Premium” and, the first few words apart, is available on subscription.

The Gazette

The London Gazette (first published 1665), Edinburgh Gazette (first published 1699, content available online 1796 onwards) and Belfast Gazette (first published 1921) are the official newspapers of record of the United Kingdom, recording and disseminating a wide range of official, regulatory and legal information. Legal content includes insolvency notices and certain Orders in Council. The free online archive for all three Gazettes is to be found on this website launched early in 2014, each Gazette having previously had its own web presence.

The Legal 500: United Kingdom – Solicitors

The Legal 500 series of guides to legal services providers is published by Legalease. This section of the UK guide includes directories of UK law firms and in-house lawyers. A directory of UK barristers can be found by selecting “UK Bar” from the “Rankings Home” menu.

The Times

The Times newspaper gives considerable coverage to legal matters and is the only UK national daily newspaper still publishing law reports. The site has a dedicated Law section. Since June 2010 the online version of the paper is available by subscription only.

Timeanddate.com

Extensive tabulated information and calculators relating to many aspects of time and dates. The “World Clock” in the Current Time section has current local times around the world. For all listed locations daily sunrise and sunset times are available, not just for the current year but also for earlier years, in some instances back to 1965. In the Calendar section there are yearly and monthly calendars for the years 1 to 3999. Other sections include an International Dialling Codes service, with information on dialling between many locations worldwide.

TSO Shop

TSO (The Stationery Office – now part of the Williams Lea Group) is the major publisher of UK official publications, including Parliamentary publications and Command Papers, legislation, the official Gazettes and other statutory publications. Its database includes more than 700,000 titles currently in print in the UK. Publications are browsable by subject, and forthcoming key publications are listed under “Coming Soon”. A free Email Updates service is also available. All issues of TSO’s Daily List from January 2008 onwards are reproduced on the site.

UK Web Archive

The UK Web Archive (UKWA) is a partnership of the six UK legal deposit libraries which aims to collect all UK web sites at least once a year. Important sites are collected more frequently (up to daily). There are over 100 collections arranged by topic or theme, and all content is searchable by URL, word or phrase.

University of Cambridge: iDiscover

iDiscover is the online catalogue for the libraries of the University of Cambridge, including holdings of the Cambridge University Library, its dependent libraries (including the Squire Law Library) and most faculty, departmental and college libraries. There are records for online articles as well as for printed books; full-text articles are not general accessible without log-in.

University of Oxford: Libraries

This section of the Oxford University web site provides a single point of access to information on all of the University, College, departmental and other libraries (totalling more than 100) which together make up the largest university library system in the UK. The “Search Oxford Libraries Online” (SOLO) facility permits searching of all catalogues together, or those of specific collections, e.g. Bodleian Law Library.

Venables Legal Resources

This site, founded in 1995 by IT consultant Delia Venables, and now maintained by legal publishing consultant Nick Holmes, aims to provide a comprehensive set of links to legal resources which may be of use to the legal community in the UK and Ireland. There are sections aimed at three separate user groups: Individuals, Businesses and Lawyers. Other sections include Updates (for new sites, legal blogs, etc) and Lawyer Listings. Entries are annotated and new content is added frequently.

Venables Legal Resources: Lawyer Listings

This is a section of the site Venables Legal Resources, founded by Delia Venables and now published by Infolaw Limited. It provides annotated links to web sites of barristers’ chambers in England and Wales, public access barristers, solicitors in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, and of various law associations. There is also information about the bar of England and Wales, Scottish advocates, and the Bar of Ireland. Elsewhere on the site there is a section of links to current awareness services, legal news services, legal blogs, and Infolaw’s Internet Newsletter for Lawyers.

W. Green

W. Green is an Edinburgh-based publisher of Scottish legal texts and law reports. The company has specialised in legal publishing for over a century and has been part of the Sweet & Maxwell group since 1956. The site has a link to the online catalogue which can be browsed and searched via Sweet & Maxwell’s website.

Weather Underground

Worldwide weather information, with conditions and forecasts for over 60,000 locations, about 300 of them in the UK. For many locations there is historical information on daily conditions back to 1996. To access this select the History tab under the relevant location.

Westlaw UK: Journals

Subscription service, providing full text access to over 100 legal journals and newsletters published by Sweet & Maxwell, as well as the Current Legal Information Legal Journals Index.

Wikipedia

English language edition of the collaboratively written free online encyclopedia, containing over six million articles and covering up-to-the-minute issues and developments besides traditional encyclopedia subjects.

Wildy & Sons Ltd

Wildy & Sons law booksellers was established in 1830 and is based in London at Lincoln’s Inn and Fleet Street. It has a comprehensive stock of new publications and a vast second-hand department. Information on the site includes listings of new books and looseleaf editions, details of new supplements and releases, and a browse by subject facility. There is an online search and ordering facility. The site also includes information on Wildy’s publishing arm, Wildy, Simmonds and Hill.

Wiley Blackwell

This publishing group for academic and professional titles was created from the merger in February 2007 of Oxford-based Blackwell Publishing Ltd with the scientific, technical and medical business of US publisher John Wiley & Sons Inc. The site has a browse by subject facility and the online catalogue can be searched by keyword, author and title.

World Factbook

Online reference book (formerly also available in a print edition but now online only) published by the United States Central Intelligence Agency and updated every two weeks. It contains economic, political and geographical information on all countries and areas of the world, as well as maps. Appendices include a glossary of abbreviations, a list of international organizations, and a list of place-names cross referenced to country entries.

World Legal Systems

Five legal systems – civil law, common law, customary law, Muslim law and mixed systems – are briefly described, and the world’s “political entities” (mostly countries) are listed and classified according to the system under which they operate. This is the second edition (2008) of a site first created in 1999 by JuriGlobe, a research group formed by professors from the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa.

WS

The Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet, or WS Society, is a professional society most of whose members are Scottish solicitors, in law firms or in-house. The web site provides information on the activities of the Society (with a particular emphasis on education and training) and allows access to the online catalogue of the Signet Library, one of the most extensive law libraries in Scotland.

Yahoo!

The UK and Ireland version of Yahoo! Search defaults to a search of the whole web, with the option in results pages to narrow down to local sites only. Other search options include images and news.

Yahoo! Finance

News and information on a wide range of financial topics, including UK market news and a currency converter. Market information includes historical share prices, to access which first select the company name (eg via FTSE 100 or FTSE 250 and then Components) and then select the Historical Data tab on the company page that opens.

Young Legal Aid Lawyers

Young Legal Aid Lawyers (YLAL) is a group of lawyers committed to practising in England and Wales in areas of law that have traditionally been publicly funded. Its membership includes qualified junior lawyers, pupil barristers, trainee solicitors, students and paralegals. YLAL campaigns for a sustainable legal aid system, promotes diversity within the legal aid sector and the interests of new entrants to the profession, and provides a network for those beginning careers in the legal aid sector.
