Department for Communities and Local Government
The Department for Communities and Local Government is a central government department with responsibilites which include regional and local government, planning, building regulations, housing, homelessness, social exclusion, and fire and rescue services. This section of the GOV.UK web site provides access to information on the department's activities, policies, publications and announcements, and to information more widely across the whole government. Local Government Association
The Local Government Association represents all local authorities in England and Wales as well as police, fire, national park and passenger transport authorities. The web site includes recent press releases and Ebulletins. Within the "Parliament" section there is information on Select Committee Inquiries and other parliamentary matters of interest to local government. LGA publications can be downloaded from the site.

Local Government Information Unit
The LGIU is an independent research and information organisation supported by over 150 councils and the local government trade unions. It aims to be an advocate for strong democratic local government. The site gives details of publications, services and membership. All LGIU publications can be downloaded.

Local government legislation: byelaws
This section of gov.uk contains a guide that sets out the arrangements for the processing of those byelaws for which the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government is the confirming authority. It replaces the Home Office Circular 25/1996: 'Arrangements for confirmation of local authority byelaws'

Local Government Ombudsman
The Local Government Ombudsman investigates complaints of maladministration by local authorities and certain other bodies in England, including education admissions appeal panels and adult social care providers. The site includes guidance, a "Complaint Outcomes" section which includes all investigation reports published since 1 April 2005, a number of special reports on the handling of complaints in particular subject areas, recent annual reports, and other publications.

Local Government Standards Tribunal
The First-tier Tribunal (Local Government Standards in England) hears and adjudicates on matters concerning the conduct of local authority councillors, including appeals against the decisions of local standards committees. It came into existence on 18 January 2010, taking over from the Adjudication Panel for England (2003-2010) and forming part of the First-tier Tribunal's General Regulatory Chamber. This section of the Justice portal site includes guidance and forms. Links are provided to relevant legislation on the Legislation.gov.uk site, which includes procedural rules and model codes of conduct, and to decisions 2003 onwards and daily court lists on the Tribunals Judiciary site.

Oultwood: Local Government Web Site Index
This web site is run by Oultwood, a small private company based in East Anglia in the UK. It provides links to all local government sites and a range of national local government organisations. It covers the UK and continental Europe as well as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA.

Standards for England
Standards for England was the operating name for the Standards Board for England, a non-departmental public body which was responsible until 31 January 2012 for promoting ethical standards amongst elected and co-opted members of local authorities. The Board was formally wound up on 31 March 2012 but its archived web site remains accessible here on the National Archives site.
