Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) is the government body which administers the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme in England, Scotland and Wales. The site contains the current (2008) scheme, a guide to the scheme, application forms, and a brief guide to applying for compensation.

First-tier Tribunal (Criminal Injuries Compensation)

The First-tier Tribunal (Criminal Injuries Compensation) hears appeals against awards made by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme. Formerly known as the Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeals Panel (CICAP), it has since 3 November 2008 formed part of the First-tier Tribunal's Social Entitlement Chamber. The site includes the 1996, 2001 and 2008 schemes, with guidance documents; Chairman's directions, practice statements and protocol; annual reports 2001/2002 onwards; and case digests with links to full text.

The First-tier Tribunal (War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation) hears appeals from ex-servicemen or women in England and Wales about the two schemes that provide compensation for injuries in the armed forces - the War Pensions Scheme and the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme. Formerly known as the Pensions Appeal Tribunal, it has since 3 November 2008 formed the War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation Chamber of the First-tier Tribunal. The site provides information on the appeal process, leaflets, forms, and procedural rules.

Government Actuary's Department: Ogden Tables

The Actuarial Tables for Use in Personal Injury and Fatal Accident Cases, commonly known as the Ogden Tables, may be downloaded from this page of the Government Actuary's Department site. Besides the current 6th edition (2007), the 5th (2004) and 4th (2000) are also available.

The Personal Injury database within Lawtel contains articles; case comments; an archive of over 2800 PI quantum reports from 1980 onwards; and various practice tools, including the JSB Guidelines (9th edition, searchable), PI Actuarial Tables (4th, 5th and 6th editions), the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, an Inflation Calculator, an Interest Calculator, and up-to-date full-text versions of the CPR Pre-Action Protocols for Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence claims. Many unreported settlements and awards are included among the cases. The site is updated daily.

Ministry of Justice: Claims Management Regulation

Regulation of claims management activities was introduced under the Compensation Act 2006 and came fully into force on 23 April 2007. The regulator is the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice. Content includes links to relevant legislation and rules; guidance and policy documents; consultations; and an occasional bulletin, which replaced an earlier series of newsletters. There is also a search facility for checking whether or not a business has been authorised.

Motor Insurers' Bureau

The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) enters into agreements with the government concerning compensation of victims of road accidents caused by negligent uninsured and untraced drivers. Documents on the site include the texts of all the Uninsured Drivers' Agreements and Untraced Drivers' Agreements applying within various parts of the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar. To access these select "Agreements" within "Downloadable Documents".

Personal Injury Calculator

Online calculator created by Richard Paige, barrister of Sovereign Chambers in Leeds. It can be used to update personal injury awards in line with inflation and, if appropriate, the decision of the Court of Appeal in Heil v. Rankin.

PI Brief Update is a monthly email newsletter, free to those who sign up, which provides brief details of recent case law on personal injury. It is written by a team of barristers who specialise in personal injury.

piCalculator

This site, by Rebmark Legal Solutions Limited, provides tables and calculators designed to assist personal injury lawyers to prepare personal injury and clinical negligence claim documents. Tables are reproduced from both the 5th and the 6th editions of the Ogden Tables. The calculators are accessible only by subscribers.
