British Insurance Law Association

The British Insurance Law Association (BILA) is both a domestic organisation and the British Chapter of the Association International de Droit des Assurances (AIDA). The BILA Journal archive and most other site content is now restricted to members, though the current issue of the journal remains publicly available.

Notes on recent cases in the UK and other jurisdictions, mostly relating to shipping and insurance, are provided on this site by David Martin-Clark, a barrister, maritime arbitrator, and consultant in shipping and insurance.

Elborne Mitchell

Elborne Mitchell is a City of London solicitors' firm whose specialisms include insurance, reinsurance, shipping and commercial matters. Its web site includes over a hundred articles 1997 onwards on these and other topics, written by partners in the firm either specially for the site or for various (mainly insurance) publications.

Financial Conduct Authority

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulates the financial services industry in the UK. It was established on 1 April 2013 as one of the successors to the Financial Services Authority (FSA). It is responsible for promoting effective competition, ensuring that relevant markets function well, and for the conduct regulation of all financial services firms. The Financial Services Register, a register of all the firms, individuals and other bodies regulated by the FSA, is accessible online. There is a link to the separate Handbook Online site which makes available in one location both the FCA Handbook and the Prudential Regulation Authority Handbook, together with related guidance.

Financial Ombudsman Service

The Financial Ombudsman Service, created by the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA) 2000, settles disputes between businesses providing financial services and their customers. Its site includes details of the complaint process, annual reviews 1999/2000 onwards, a link to the FSMA 2000, and a link to the dispute resolution section of the Financial Conduct Authority Handbook (on the FCA site), under which it operates. There is a regular online newsletter Ombudsman News.

Financial Services Authority

From April 2013 the FSA became two separate regulatory authorities and this site is no longer updated. The Financial Conduct Authority can be found at www.fca.org.uk and the Prudential Regulation Authority at www.bankofengland.co.uk/pra/Pages/default.aspx. The National Archives have archived versions of the FSA site.

Forum of Insurance Lawyers

The Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL) is an organisation for lawyers who act predominantly or exclusively for insurance companies. It also lobbies actively on insurance litigation issues. Much of the content of its web site is restricted to members only, but some news and information, including lists of individual and firm members, is freely available.

Ince & Co.

Ince & Co. is an international commercial law firm. The site's "Our Knowledge" section includes legal updates on various topics including insurance and reinsurance law and shipping and trade. A "Shipping E-brief" is published several times a year.

Lloyd's Acts and Byelaws

This section of  the Lloyd's web site provides the full text of all Lloyd's Acts and Byelaws currently in force, together with the latest version of the Underwriting Requirements.

Motor Insurers' Bureau

The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) enters into agreements with the government concerning compensation of victims of road accidents caused by negligent uninsured and untraced drivers. Documents on the site include the texts of all the Uninsured Drivers' Agreements and Untraced Drivers' Agreements applying within various parts of the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar. To access these select "Downloadable Documents" and then "Agreements."

Prudential Regulation Authority

The Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) is responsible for the prudential regulation and supervision of banks, building societies, credit unions, insurers and major investment firms in the UK. It is part of the Bank of England, and was established by the Financial Services Act 2012 as one of the successors to the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Within the PRA section of the Bank of England web site there are PRA publications, consultations, and information on the regulatory data which firms need to provide. The PRA Handbook and the Financial Services Register are accessible via external links.
