Aboriginal Law and Legislation

This resource compiled by the Ontario barrister and solicitor Bill Henderson provides legal materials relating to aboriginals from Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Australia. It includes constitutions, legislation and court decisions.

Academy of Experts

The Academy of Experts is a professional body for expert witnesses in the UK and worldwide. The "Useful Cases" section under "Resources" on its web site contains notes on selected UK and US cases of relevance to experts and mediators. Access to the searchable online register is free, though registration is required.

Acas

Acas (the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) is a non-departmental public body whose purpose is to promote and facilitate strong employment relations in the UK. The site's Publications section, which can be found within "Advice and Guidance", includes annual reports 1999-2000 onwards, codes of practice, research papers, and a variety of advisory handbooks, booklets and leaflets which can be downloaded free or bought as hard copy. The publications are also indexed via the "Advice A-Z" section.

Access to Archives

Access to Archives (A2A) is a searchable database providing access to catalogue records of archives held in over 400 local record offices, libraries, universities, museums and other repositories throughout England and Wales.

Accountant in Bankruptcy

The Accountant in Bankruptcy is an executive agency of the Scottish Government. It was set up to supervise and administer the process of sequestration (personal bankruptcy) in Scotland and to record corporate insolvencies. The site includes various publications and guides on the process of insolvency in Scotland, annual reports 1986-87 onwards, and relevant legislation.

Acronym Finder

Acronym Finder claims to provide the world's largest and most comprehensive searchable database of acronyms, abbreviations and initialisms.

Act Now Training

Act Now Training Ltd is a company specialising in information law training for the public sector. Its site includes articles on data protection, freedom of information, regulation of investigatory powers and surveillance; a newsletter (with archive 2000 onwards); and links to organisations and publications.

Acts Online

Act Online is a database of South African Acts arranged by subject, with amendments as published in the Government Gazette. Whilst the collection is not as yet comprehensive, it includes some earlier Acts not covered by the South Africa Government Online web site. Each Act has an introduction giving details of latest developments.

Additional Support Needs Tribunals for Scotland

Under the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Acts 2004 and 2009 Scottish education authorities may draw up Co-ordinated Support Plans (CSPs) for children and young people who have "additional support needs". Additional Support Needs Tribunals hear appeals made by parents and young people on certain matters relating to such plans. The site's content includes information on the complaints procedure, annual reports, links to legislation, and a decisions database.

Adjudication Panel for Wales

The Panel's role is to form tribunals to consider whether members of local authorities in Wales have breached their authority's statutory code of conduct. Its web site includes procedural information, decisions (in the Register of Tribunals section) and annual reports.

Adjudication.co.uk is an adjudicator nominating body and provider of adjudication services and information. Resources on its site include legislation relating to adjudication in the construction and telecommunications industries and digests of cases 1999 onwards, with links to full judgments.

Adjudicator to HM Land Registry

The Adjudicator deals with certain kinds of dispute arising out of the work of the Land Registry. Site content includes forms, procedural information including the text of the Adjudicator to Her Majesty's Land Registry (Practice and Procedure) Rules 2003, and a link to selected decisions 2005 onwards on the Tribunals Judiciary web site.

Adjudicator's Office

The Adjudicator's Office deals with complaints about HM Revenue & Customs, the Valuation Office Agency and the Insolvency Service. The site includes annual reports and information and guidance on the complaint procedure.

Administrative Appeals Chamber (Upper Tribunal)

The Administrative Appeals Chamber of the Upper Tribunal is a superior court of record, with UK-wide jurisdiction. It deals with appeals from the General Regulatory Chamber, the Health, Education and Social Care Chamber, the Social Entitlement Chamber and the War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation Chamber of the First-tier Tribunal. It also deals with first appeals from decisions of the Independent Safeguarding Authority and of the Traffic Commissioners, and with appeals from some decisions of tribunals in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Upon its establishment on 3 November 2008 it took over the work of the former Social Security, Child Support and Pensions Appeal Commissioners, who dealt with appeals on points of law from Social Security, Child Support and Pensions Appeal Tribunals. The site has information, guidance and downloadable forms. It also provides access either on the site or via links to decisions 1991 onwards for England & Wales and Scotland (and to some earlier decisions), and also to decisions 1973 onwards (and a very small number of earlier ones) of the separate Northern Ireland Commissioners.

Administrative Justice & Tribunals Council

This advisory non-departmental public body keeps under review the administrative justice system as a whole, ensuring that there is an effective relationship between the courts, tribunals, ombudsmen, complaint-handling bodies and alternative dispute resolution providers. It replaced the former Council on Tribunals in November 2007. The site has a link to the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007, under which it was established, and sections devoted to news, consultations and publications. An electronic newsletter Adjust is published quarterly.

Admiralty & Maritime Law Guide

This is a comprehensive collection of over 1500 annotated links to (inter alia) US admiralty and maritime legislation and case law, international conventions, and maritime law by country. The site is maintained by a member of the US law firm Betancourt, Van Hemmen, Greco & Kenyon, but appears not to have been updated since January 2006.

Admiralty, Commercial and London Mercantile Court

The current editions of the Admiralty & Commercial Courts Guide and the Mercantile Court Guide are provided here on the Justice portal site, together with other information, commercial court forms and contact details.

AdmiraltyLaw.com

This site focuses on Canadian maritime and admiralty law, and is maintained by Christopher J. Giaschi of the Vancouver law firm Giaschi & Margolis. The subject is divided into categories, listed on the left, and within each category are case summaries, prefaced by an introduction. The relevant Canadian statutes are reproduced and there is a selection of papers and speeches by various authors. There are links to maritime law sites, and some more general ones, from many countries.

Adult Criminal Case Management Framework

This is an archived version created by the National Archives in May 2010. The Framework is in two parts. Part 1 (July 2007) covers magistrates' courts and part 2 (January 2008) covers the Crown Court. It describes case management procedures, and the roles and responsibilities for operating them of administrative staff and of the defence. There are "route maps" for guilty plea cases and not guilty plea cases.

Advertising Standards Authority

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the UK's independent regulator of advertising across all media. It enforces the advertising codes written by the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP). Its web site includes links to the current editions of the codes on the CAP site, a searchable database of recent adjudications, compliance reports, research reports, and recent annual reports.

Advocate Khoj

Advocate Khoj is a free legal information web portal which helps people find qualified lawyers for their legal needs in India. Its Law Library also provides free access to Acts, Supreme Court judgments, law school information, agreements, forms and a glossary of legal terms.

Advocates Library

The Advocates Library is the largest legal practitioners' library in Scotland. The web site provides details of library services and access to the online catalogue. Also searchable from here are the catalogues of the National Library of Scotland and the Signet Library.

Aegis

Aegis is an independent international organisation devoted to taking practical action to prevent genocide. The 'Reports & Films' section includes Aegis' own publications along with UN conventions and other bodies' documentation on genocide.

African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights

The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights was established by charter in 1986. This site contains details of the Commission's history, members, mandate and Rules of Procedure. Documents available include the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child; the Protocol for the establishment of an African Court of Human and Peoples' Rights; the Protocol on the Rights of Women; the Convention on the Rights of Refugees; and other resolutions, declarations, reports and ratifications.

African International Courts and Tribunals

The African International Courts and Tribunals (AICT) site has been developed by the Project on International Courts and Tribunals to provide information on international judicial bodies operating in Africa. There are separate sections devoted to continental courts, subregional courts, international criminal courts for African conflicts, and other international courts (eg International Criminal Court) handling African cases. Information on each court, either provided on the AICT site itself or via links, includes news, basic documents and cases.

African Union

The African Union (AU) was established in 2002 to promote unity and international cooperation, and accelerate socio-economic improvements, among African states. AU documents on the site include speeches; decisions and declarations; reports; and treaties, conventions and protocols. Also included are some documents (eg founding treaties) relating to the AU's two predecessor bodies, the African Economic Community and the Organization of African Unity.

Agricultural Land Tribunals

Information on the Agricultural Land Tribunals in England and Wales is provided here within the Farm Management section of the Defra web site. There are links to texts of the Agricultural Land Tribunals (Rules) Orders 1978 and 2007 and of the Agricultural Land Tribunals (Succession to Agricultural Tenancies) Order 1984.

Air Accidents Investigation Branch

The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is responsible for the investigation of civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents within the UK and its overseas territories. It is part of the Department for Transport. Publications on the site include AAIB bulletins and reports of various kinds, and a small number of reports published by foreign accident investigation authorities. "Guidance and regulations" includes links to civil aviation regulations on the Legislation.gov.uk site.

Al-Islam.org

Al-Islam.org provides a collection of resources related to the history, law, practice and society of the Islamic religion and Muslim peoples. It was created and is maintained by the non-profit organisation Ahlul Bayt Digital Islam Library Project (DILP). The library can be searched or browsed by topic and resource type. Select "Islamic Laws" on the home page to access the English version of Taudhihul Masae'l.

Al-Sweady Public Inquiry

The Al-Sweady Public Inquiry, chaired by former High Court judge Sir Thayne Forbes, is an inquiry into allegations that British soldiers mistreated and murdered Iraqi detainees in 2004. It was announced in November 2009 and began full public hearings on 4 March 2013. Its web site includes FAQs, key documents and transcripts of hearings.

Alcohol licensing

This section of the GOV.UK site provides information on the different types of alcohol licences available and guidance on how to apply for them. 

AltaVista

AltaVista is a general purpose web search engine owned by Yahoo! Searches can be carried out over the whole web or restricted to UK sites only, and there are optional search settings for country and language.

Alternative Family Law

Alternative Family Law is a London law firm specialising in family law, established by solicitor and mediator Andrea Woelke in 2005. Its web site includes information about all aspects of family law, with particular emphasis on alternative approaches to family law and issues relating to same-sex relationships.

American Bar Association

The American Bar Association is a voluntary association of lawyers and law students, and this is its main web site, providing information and news relating to the legal profession in the United States. Information on legal education, admission to the bar and how the courts work may be found in the "Public Resources" section which is accessible from the foot of any page. Via the "Publications & CLE" tab there is a link to the separate web site of the monthly ABA Journal, where issues from January 2004 to the current one may be accessed.

American Law Sources On-line

American Law Sources On-line (ALSO!) is a gateway service maintained by LawSource Inc which aims to provide a comprehensive collection of links to free online sources of US and Canadian law. In addition to US federal and state law materials, there are links to sources of commentary and practice aids. Selecting "Federal Government" on the home page reveals a search screen that links to a number of sources for Supreme Court cases back to 1790. Also included as one of the links is an outline of the US legal system.

American Society of Internatonal Law: Electronic Resource Guide: International Environmental Law

This chapter of the ASIL's Electronic Resource Guide is a structured guide to researching international environmental law, with hypertext links to the sources mentioned. The author is Anne Burnett of the University of Georgia [USA] Law School Library. Content is revised and updated from time to time (currently to 8 December 2011).

Amnesty International

Amnesty International is a campaigning body for human rights worldwide. Its site includes reports on individual countries, searchable via an A-Z country index; campaign reports and thematic publications 1996 onwards; and annual reports 1998 onwards (with summaries for 1993-1997).

Anglo-American Legal Tradition

AALT is an ongoing project based at the University of Houston, Texas. The site contains digitised images of medieval and early modern documents in the National Archives of England, focusing on major legal series within the period 1272-1800. Additional content includes some on-site guidance on reading the documents, and links to online palaeography and medieval Latin tutorials on the National Archives web site.

Anguilla Financial Services

This Anguilla government site includes the full text of selected legislation relating to companies, partnerships and trusts, the Anguilla Financial Services Authority code of practice, and a comparison table relating to a number of Caribbean offshore jurisdictions.

Annotated Justinian Code

This annotated English translation of the Codex Justinianus, on the web site of the University of Wyoming College of Law, was made by the late Justice Fred H. Blume of the Wyoming Supreme Court. A translation of Justinian's Novellae (Novels) is also provided.

Appleby

Appleby is a firm which provides offshore legal, fiduciary and administration services from offices in locations worldwide including Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Hong Kong, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, London, Mauritius and the Seychelles. The site has a wide range of publications in various categories (briefs, guides, articles, newsletters, etc), listed by practice area and by jurisdiction as well as by category. Registration is required to download these.

Arab Human Rights Index

Sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme on Governance in the Arab Region (UNDP-POGAR). The index is a repository for the entire set of United Nations documents pertaining to human rights and the responses, including reservations, by the Arab member states to the committees that monitor the core international human rights treaties. Other resources include: country profiles and links to news sources, key web sites and bibliographic resources.

Architects Registration Board

The Architects Registration Board (ARB), created by the Architects Act 1997, is the independent regulator of all UK registered architects. The register is searchable online. Also on the site are details of the complaint procedure, information leaflets, annual reports 2000/01 onwards, the architects' Code of Conduct, and many other publications. The Architects Act 1997 is reproduced on the site.

Archive of European Integration

Hosted by the University of Pittsburgh, the Archive of European Integration (AEI) is an electronic repository for research materials on European integration and unification. It contains not only official European Union or European Community documents, but also independently produced research materials.

Arden Chambers

Set of barristers' chambers specialising in housing and local government law. The site includes "eflashes", providing immediate responses to recent decisions and other legal developments in the chambers' areas of work, and Housing Insight, an occasional series addressing selected housing issues.

Ashworth Special Hospital Personality Disorder Unit: Report of the Committee of Inquiry

This inquiry, chaired by His Honour Peter Fallon QC, investigated allegations by a former patient about misuse of drugs and alcohol, financial irregularities, possible paedophile activity, and the availability of pornographic material on the Unit. The full text of the inquiry's report, published January 1999, is available here on the Stationery Office's Official Documents site.

ASIL Guide to Electronic Resources for International Law

The American Society of International Law's electronic resource guide, often referred to as the ERG, provides structured, annotated links, in a narrative format, to major international law resources on the internet. An introductory chapter is followed by chapters on commercial arbitration, criminal law, economic law, environmental law, European Union law, human rights, humanitarian law, intellectual property law, international organisations, private international law, treaties and the United Nations. The guide is updated on a six-monthly basis.

Ask Jeeves UK

Ask Jeeves is a general purpose search engine designed to respond to questions posed in everyday language as well as to single word or phrase searches. There is an option to restrict searches to the UK. Along with the search results the site also presents a number of suggestions for narrowing or expanding the search.

Aspals Legal Pages

Aspals Legal Pages is aimed primarily at military and international lawyers involved in court martial defence work in the UK. The principal webmaster is a former Army Legal Services Officer and the site hosts contributions from practising and non-practising lawyers. It includes digests of domestic court martial cases and international cases,with links to judgments; there are also links to relevant legislation, news and articles about military law.

ASSER International Sports Law Centre

This site, produced by the International Sports Law Centre of the T.M.C. Asser Institute, The Hague, includes selected cases from the European Court of Justice 2004 onwards and the Court of Arbitration for Sport 2006 onwards. The full text of the International Sports Law Journal 2000 onwards is freely available except for the current and preceding 3 years, for which there are contents lists only. Research reports and other publications are available as free pdf downloads, and relevant EU documents are also available.

Association of Chief Police Officers

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) provides a forum for chief police officers and sets out agreed national standards and guidelines for policing in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The "Professional Practice" section of the ACPO web site comprises a large collection of policy documents, guidance and manuals covering the investigation of various categories of offences, and a wide range of police activities and procedures. There is an archive of press releases, October 2010 onwards.

Association of Costs Lawyers

The Association of Costs Lawyers (ACL) is the professional body for costs lawyers (formerly known as law costs draftsmen) in the UK. Its site includes information on the role, education and training of costs lawyers, a directory of members, news items, and some recent issues of the Costs Lawyer monthly magazine.

Association of Lawyers for Children

The ALC is an organisation promoting justice for children and young people within the legal system of England and Wales. Its web site includes responses to proposed legislation, press releases, newsletters 2004 onwards (excluding the current issue), and a collection of links.

Asylum Support Tribunal

The First-tier Tribunal (Asylum Support) considers appeals by asylum seekers against refusal or termination of support by the UK Border Agency. It has formed part of the First-tier Tribunal's Social Entitlement Chamber since 3 November 2008, having been first established in April 2000 as the Asylum Support Adjudicators. Information available from this page of the Justice portal site includes forms and guidance. There are links to a searchable database of the Tribunal's Reason Statements (Decisions) on the Tribunals Judiciary web site, and to procedural rules and other legislation on the Legislation.gov.uk site.

Atkinson Law

Atkinson Law is the web site of Daniel Atkinson, a chartered civil engineer, adjudicator and non-practising barrister. Besides information about the services offered by his company, there are articles and case digests relating chiefly to construction disputes. There are links to the full text of the case if it is publicly available.

Attorney General's Office

The Attorney General's Office (AGO) provides support to the work of the Attorney General and the Solicitor General, the Law Officers of the Crown. The Attorney General is the Chief Legal Adviser to the Crown and a government minister with responsibility for all Crown litigation, overseeing the work of the Crown Prosecution Service (incorporating the Revenue and Customs Prosecutions Office), the Serious Fraud Office and other bodies. This section of the GOV.UK web site has information on the AGO's activities, announcements and publications. There is a quick link to the Attorney General's Guidelines for prosecutors and other guidance to the legal profession, covering such matters as disclosure of material and the acceptance of pleas.

Audit Commission

The Audit Commission is responsible for ensuring that money spent on public services in England (Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own separate bodies), in the areas of local government, housing, health, criminal justice and fire and rescue services, is spent effectively. It publishes reports of various kinds, including Audit Commission Reports (listed back to 1984, in full text 1999 onwards), Inspection Reports (2000 onwards) and Joint Reviews (1999 onwards). Also available are recent annual reviews and annual reports.

AustLII

AustLII, the web site of the Australasian Legal Information Institute, provides full-text databases of most Australian decisions and legislation, both of the Commonwealth of Australia (ie federal) and of states and territories, and incorporates links to New Zealand material on the NZLII site. Also included are treaties to which Australia is a party, and access to the full text of nearly a hundred Australian legal journals.

Australia.gov.au

This site is the entry point for information and online services provided by the government of the Commonwealth of Australia. The "Topics" tab gives access to an alphabetical list of subjects which includes "Law and Justice". Under each subject heading are official publications, statements of government policy and links to other relevant sites. At the foot of every page there are links to the web sites of state and territory governments and of local councils.

Australian Institute of Criminology

The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) is Australia's national research and knowledge centre on crime and criminal justice. It publishes frequent reports to aid government in policy-making, which may be found on the web site.

Australian Law Reform Commission

The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC), a federal agency which was established in 1975, conducts inquiries into areas of law reform at the request of the Attorney-General. Most of its Final Reports, 1975 onwards are available free on the web site, as are Discussion Papers 1979 onwards (also selected papers from earlier years), Issues Papers 1996 onwards, and the journal Reform, retitled ALRC Brief in 2011.

Australian Law: Free Online Resources

This guide, compiled by Kirsty Wilson and Robin Gardner of Melbourne University Library, outlines free legal resources for Australian legal research (legislation, case law and secondary sources), and provides links to research guides covering Australian and foreign/international/comparative law. Also included is a section on historical resources, mostly on constitutional matters.

Australian Law: Selected Websites

The National Library of Australia provides this gateway site for Australian law. It is divided as follows: main sites; law by jurisdiction; legal profession. The home page has a link to an introduction to the Australian legal system, provided by the Attorney-General's Department.

Australian Privacy Foundation

The Australian Privacy Foundation is a non-government organisation dedicated to protecting the privacy rights of Australians. The Resources section of the web site contains Commonwealth and State/Territory privacy laws, laws of other countries and international instruments. There is also a directory of associations, media releases and papers published by the Foundation and a history of privacy law and policy. Guidance is given on how - and to whom, depending on the sector or industry concerned - to make a complaint relating to intrusion of privacy.

Australian Treaties Database

This Australian Government site allows access to Australian treaties by subject, type and/or country, or date. Links are provided to multilateral treaty status sites, and there is information on treaties generally and treaty making. 

Avalon Project

A collection of full text documents in law, history and diplomacy, including documents up to the present time. The site is produced by the Lillian Goldman Law Library at Yale Law School.

Azelle Rodney Inquiry

Azelle Rodney died in north London on 30 April 2005 following an operation by the Metropolitan Police. In June 2010 Sir Christopher Holland, a retired High Court judge, was appointed to chair an inquiry into Azelle Rodney's death. Transcripts are available on the site, together with key documents and other background information.
