UCL Constitution Unit: Freedom of Information and Data Protection

The Constitution Unit is part of the Department of Political Science at University College London. Its team of Freedom of Information (FOI) and Data Protection (DP) experts have been reviewing information policy decisions and providing training and consultancy services in FOI and DP issues since 1996. In addition to conducting research, they assist both central government departments and local authorities reviews of FOI and DP issues. The site contains monthly updates which collate what has been happening in the world of FOI & DP in the UK and across the world. There is also a monthly international focus which profiles a different FOI regime each month.

UK Border Agency

The UK Border Agency, formed in April 2008, is an executive agency of the Home Office with responsibility for managing UK border control, enforcement of immigration and customs regulations, citizenship and asylum. "Immigration Law" within the "Policy and Law" section provides access to current legislation and the current consolidated Immigration Rules (HC 395 as amended). Statements of Changes are available from May 2003. "Guidance and Instructions" in the same section includes the Immigration Directorate's Instructions (IDIs), the Asylum Policy Instructions (APIs) and the Nationality Instructions (NIs). Recent consultation documents and press releases are also available.

UK Border Agency: Country of Origin Information Service

This service provides information on asylum seekers' countries of origin, with a focus on human rights issues and matters arising in asylum and human rights claims. The site includes country reports from January 2011. Material from 2006 to 2010 can be accessed on the UK government web archive.

UK Coastal Zone Law Web Site

Substantial notes on UK coastal zone law, together with UK and European legislation, selected cases 1971 onwards and an extensive collection of links, are provided on this site, which is maintained by Professor John Gibson of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Law, University of Cape Town.

UK Employment Law

David Royden (1970-2008) was a solicitor who specialised in employment law. His web site includes articles and guidance relating to employment law issues.

UK Freedom of Information Blog

This blog collates news stories and press releases concerning the operation of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and related issues in the UK and abroad. It was originally established by Steve Wood (formerly a lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, now an Assistant Commissioner at the Information Commissioner's Office) and is now maintained by the Campaign for Freedom of Information. The archive extends back to April 2003.

UK Government Web Archive

This is a selective collection of archived UK central government web sites developed by the National Archives, launched on a modest scale in September 2003 and since then greatly expanded. The chosen sites, now totalling more than 1500, are grouped together in twelve broad categories, including "Central and regional government" and "Home affairs, public order, justice and rights". Most of the sites are collected as weekly or six-monthly snapshots.

UK Government Web Archive: Public Inquiries and Inquests

Alphabetically arranged links are here provided to archived web sites of about 40 major public inquiries and inquests of the past ten to fifteen years, including several which are still ongoing.

UK Home Education Law

This is the legal page of UK Home Education, a site advocating home education, setting out the relevant law. The site states that it has been checked for legal accuracy by a team of home educating lawyers.

UK Human Rights Blog

Launched by barristers' chambers One Crown Office Row on 31 March 2010, the UK Human Rights Blog aims to provide "a free, comprehensive and balanced legal update service". Content includes case summaries, commentary, news and features, authored by human rights and public law specialists. There is also an archive of case summaries dating back to the year 2000.

UK Taxation Directory

This gateway site has a regularly updated list of links to web sites of interest to tax professionals and others seeking information on UK tax matters.

UK Treaties

Information available either directly on this site or via links, includes: details of the treaty enquiry service; advice on UK treaty practice and procedure; a list of the multilateral treaties for which the UK government is a despository, with links to text and downloadable status information; texts of treaty command papers; and links to the full text of some treaties involving the UK. Also available via the site is the UK Treaties Online Database which is searchable by treaty title, or can be browsed by treaty type and country.

UK Web Archive

The UK Web Archive collects and preserves UK web sites of cultural, historical and political importance. It is provided by the British Library in partnership with the National Library of Wales, JISC and the Wellcome Library, and in collaboration with other specialist libraries. "Government, Law & Politics" is one of the collection's main categories, and its subcategories include "Law and Legal System", "Crime, Criminology, Police and Prisons" and "Public Inquiries".

UKELA

UKELA is the UK Environmental Law Association. The “Publications and other resources” section includes the association's newsletter e-law March 2001 onwards, consultation responses and a variety of other documents. "Press centre" has press releases 2003 onwards.

UKSC Blog

The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom is the subject of this blog, which was created in May 2009, a few months before the court itself was formally established. It is produced by a group of solicitors and barristers specialising in litigation and with an interest in the judicial work of the UK Supreme Court.

UNCITRAL

UNCITRAL is the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, a body created by the UN General Assembly in 1966 to harmonise and unify the law of international trade. Its site contains adopted texts such as conventions, arbitration rules, conciliation rules and model laws. Within the section "UNCITRAL Texts and Status" there is information on the various UNCITRAL texts and the status of conventions. Other site content includes the Commission's Yearbook 1968 onwards, and "CLOUT", an extensive digest of case law.

UNEP Geneva

This web page provides links to all the programmes and secretariats of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) located in Geneva. These include the web sites of the Basel Convention on Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, the Rotterdam Convention on Trade in Hazardous Chemicals, and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. UNEP is the UN body based in Nairobi, Kenya, which coordinates UN environmental activities, and most of the links from this page to other material (eg news, publications) are to sections of the main UNEP web site.

UNIDROIT

The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) is an independent intergovernmental organisation set up to study the needs and methods for modernising, harmonising and co-ordinating private law, particularly commercial law, between states and groups of states. Much of its work is concerned with the preparation of draft conventions and model laws. Texts of these are provided on the site, together with annual reports 1996 onwards and other documents.

Uniform Law Conference of Canada

The Conference was founded in 1918 to harmonize the laws of the provinces and territories of Canada, and where appropriate the federal laws as well. It also makes recommendations for changes to federal criminal legislation based on identified deficiencies, defects or gaps in the existing law, or based on problems created by judicial interpretation of existing law. The site contains proceedings of all annual meetings (proceedings from before 1994 are in a separate database), study papers, discussion documents and a selection of uniform statutes recommended for enactment by the provinces, territories and sometimes the federal government. Uniform statutes that have been adopted are set out in tabular form.

UNILAW

Database created by the UNIDROIT Governining Council with the aim of providing up-to-date information regarding uniform law conventions and other instruments. The database is currently "under construction" and still being added to.

UNILEX

UNILEX is a database of international case law and bibliography on the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) and the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts. The texts of those instruments are provided on the site, with status information relating to CISG. For each case decision there is an abstract and, where available, full text (the latter in its original language).

United Kingdom Parliament

The UK Parliament site has information on the activities, membership and publications of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Sections of the site include: a "What's On" page of current and future business; Hansard; Bills before Parliament; a directory of MPs, peers and offices; Committees; and parliamentary publications and archives. There are links to the devolved Parliaments and Assemblies of the UK.

United Kingdom Parliament: Research Publications

This section of the UK Parliament web site contains research produced by the Libraries of both Houses and by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology. The Research Briefings are regular publications of current interest produced by the Commons Library, Lords Library and Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology. Under "Parliament and constitution research" there is a selection of research papers and standard notes produced by the House of Commons Library on subjects such as: central government, constitution, Crown, devolution, elections, Parliament, and political parties.

United Nations

The United Nations, founded in 1945 as successor to the League of Nations, aims to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress and human rights issues. Its site provides extensive background information and documentation on the UN and its main bodies, which include the General Assembly, the Security Council and the International Court of Justice, and on its many additional bodies and agencies.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

UNHCR is the UN agency responsible for safeguarding the rights and well-being of refugees. Its website provides detailed information, news, online documents and statistics. Select Resources to access the searchable "Refworld" database of online country information, legal information, policy documents and reference documents.

United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is the UN office responsible for promoting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space. The site's Space Law section includes United Nations and other treaties and agreements governing space activities; General Assembly resolutions relating to outer space; a database of national space laws; and space law FAQs.

United Nations Treaty Collection

This site provides free online access to full text both of the United Nations Treaty Series (1946-) and of the earlier League of Nations Treaty Series (1920-1944). Status information is provided currently for over 500 major multilateral treaties, with links to full text. Texts are also provided of recent multilateral treaties which have not yet been published in the UNTS. Issues of the UNTS Cumulative Index are being added by stages in reverse chronological order, currently going back to January 1987.

United States Courts

The official web site of the US federal judiciary, which has general information on the federal courts and judiciary, and links to the sites of the Supreme Court, the Courts of Appeals, District Courts and Bankruptcy Courts.

United States House of Representatives

The House of Representatives web site contains information about current House membership and activities, including the House Rules, legislative schedules, proceedings, votes and committee meetings. There are links as appropriate to other sites, including THOMAS for enacted legislation and the official Congressional Record (of proceedings and debates).

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The full text English language version of the Declaration on the site of the UN's Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Click on Search by Translations or Regions near the top left of the page for access to all translations (over 300), arranged either alphabetically or by region.

Universal Human Rights Index

The Universal Human Rights Index is a project developed by the Institute of Public Law of the University of Bern, Switzerland. The index provides access to documents of the United Nations human rights treaty bodies and the Special Procedures of Humans Rights Council. It contains all concluding observations issued by the treaty bodies from the year 2000 onwards, as well as reports published by the Special Procedures since 2006. Documents can be accessed by country, rights or body.

University of California Berkeley Human Rights Center

Established in 1994 to promote human rights and international justice, this research and training centre is now part of Berkeley Law, the UC Berkeley School of Law. The Human Rights Center (HRC) has conducted human rights investigations in more than a dozen countries, including the United States, Iraq, Rwanda, Uganda, Burma and the former Yugoslavia. The site includes information on both current and completed projects. Also available are a range of publications, including HRC reports, articles and bibliographies.

University of Cambridge: Library Catalogue Interfaces

Newton is the online catalogue for the libraries of the University of Cambridge, including holdings of the Cambridge University Library, its dependent libraries (including the Squire Law Library) and most faculty, departmental and college libraries. Searches, both basic and advanced, may be limited to specific libraries.

University of Minnesota Human Rights Library

Contains over 60,000 documents on human rights and related material, and a comprehensive set of links to over 4,000 other sites, arranged by topic, region and organisation.

University of Oxford: Libraries

This section of the Oxford University web site provides a single point of access to information on all of the University, College, departmental and other libraries (totalling more than 100) which together make up the largest university library system in the UK. The "Search Oxford Libraries Online" (SOLO) facility permits searching of all catalogues together, or those of specific collections, e.g. Bodleian Law Library.

US Department of State: Human Rights

The US Department of State's web pages dedicated to human rights issues. The site includes country reports from around the world arranged by year, region and country. The archive goes back to 1993. Also included are reports prepared by the State Department on issues such as torture and racial discrimination.

US Department of State: Office of the Legal Adviser

The Office of the Legal Adviser furnishes advice on all legal issues, domestic and international, arising in the course of the work of the US State Department. The site provides access to texts of both bilateral and multilateral treaties in force for the United States. Also included is a section devoted to private international law, and sets of links to documents reproduced in the annual publication Digest of United States Practice in International Law, 1989 to date.

USA.gov

USA.gov is the US Government's official web portal to all online government information and services. There are links to federal, state, local and tribal government sites. The site's primary arrangement is by topic, and there is an A-Z agency index. General legal content is to be found mainly under the topics "Public Safety and Law" and "Reference and General Government".

Utility Regulator

The Utility Regulator is the informal name of the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation (NIAUR), which regulates the electricity, gas, water and sewerage industries in Northern Ireland. Like its counterpart in Great Britain, Ofgem, NIAUR also exercises powers within its sector, concurrently with the Office of Fair Trading, under the Competition Act 1998. Publications on the site include consultation papers 2002 onwards and press releases 1997 onwards.
