Gambling Commission

The Gambling Commission was established in October 2005, under the Gambling Act 2005, to regulate all commercial gambling in Great Britain apart from spread betting (regulated by the Financial Services Authority) and the National Lottery (regulated by the National Lottery Commission). Its web site has news, information, guidance, consultations, and links to legislation.

Gambling Tribunal

The First-tier Tribunal (Gambling), part of the First-tier Tribunal's General Regulatory Chamber, hears appeals against decisions of the Gambling Commission. It came into existence on 18 January 2010 when it took over from the Gambling Appeals Tribunal. This section of the Justice portal site provides information on the appeal process, forms, procedural rules, and links to relevant legislation, including the Gambling Act 2005 under which the Gambling Commission and the Gambling Appeals Tribunal were established.

Gangmasters Licensing Authority

The Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA) was created under the Gangmasters (Licensing) Act 2004 to curb the exploitation of workers in the agriculture, forestry, horticulture, shellfish gathering, and food processing and packaging industries. There are public registers, codes of practice, guidance, newsletters, information on licensing procedures, and links to legislation.

Garden Court Chambers Prison Law Team: Prison Law Bulletin

Produced by the prison law team at Garden Court, a set of barristers' chambers based in Lincoln's Inn Fields, this occasional bulletin provides a round-up of recent cases in prison law, domestic and international. Bulletins are available from March  2011 onwards.

Garden Law

This advice site for homeowners in England and Wales covers such topics as boundaries, walls, trees, roots and bonfires. There is also a Discussion Forum. The site was created by Richard Smithies of Bearders Solicitors, Brighouse, West Yorkshire.

GATT Digital Library

This site, created in a partnership between the Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), contains over 59,000 documents and publications, published between 1947 and 1994, on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

Gender Recognition Panel

The Gender Recognition Panel, established under the Gender Recognition Act 2004, assesses applications from transsexual people who wish to be legally recognised in their acquired gender. Policy on gender recognition and the Gender Recognition Act are responsibilities of the Ministry of Justice. This section of the Justice portal site includes: information on the application process, forms, and guidance; a list of specialists in the field of gender dysphoria; information for medical practitioners and chartered psychologists; and links to relevant legislation, significant court judgments and recommended web sites.

General Chiropractic Council

The General Chiropractic Council (GCC) regulates chiropractors throughout the UK. The site's Publications section has annual reports, fitness to practise reports, newsletters, press releases, standards, and the full text of the Chiropractors Act 1994 and related subsidiary legislation. Details of decisions relating to registration and professional conduct may be found within the Complaints section.

General Council of the Bar of South Africa

This is the representative body for South African advocates, to which the various provincial Bar associations and societies are affiliated. The "SA Legal system" section explains the composition of the legal profession. There are links to, and/or contact detals for, the various affiliate bodies, and the Council's Uniform rules of professional conduct are reproduced in full in the Rules of Ethics section. The South African bar journal, Advocate (until 1999 entitled Consultus) is available in full text, 1988 onwards.

General Dental Council

The General Dental Council (GDC) regulates all dental professionals in the UK. The Dentists Register and Rolls of Dental Auxiliaries are searchable on its web site. Also on the site are "Standards for Dental Professionals" and other guidance documents; the GDC's various Rules; information on complaints procedures; and details of outcomes of recent hearings of the Professional Conduct Committee.

General Medical Council

The General Medical Council (GMC) registers doctors to practise medicine in the UK. The List of Registered Medical Practitioners, a register of doctors who are eligible to work in general practice in the health service in the UK, may be searched on its site. It includes any publicly available fitness to practise history since 20 October 2005. Recent fitness to practise decisions are provided up to June 2012, when this function was transferred to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service. Relevant legislation, including a consolidated version with amendments of the Medical Act 1983, is to be found in the "About us" section. The "Guidance on Good Practice" section has both current guidance documents and an archive going back to 1963.

General Optical Council

The General Optical Council (GOC) regulates dispensing opticians and optometrists and those bodies corporate carrying on business as optometrists or dispensing opticians. Its Register is searchable online. A Legislation section within "About Us" has the Opticians Act 1989 and rules and regulations made under that Act, and codes of conduct can be found under "Policies, Procedures and Protocols". Decisions and transcripts from disciplinary hearings 2005 onwards can be found under "Hearings" within "Our Work".

General Osteopathic Council

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) regulates the profession of osteopathy and maintains the statutory register of osteopaths. The register is searchable online. Other site content includes the Osteopaths Act 1993 and secondary legislation; the current code of practice and other guidance; information on the complaint procedure and recent findings; and recent annual fitness to practise reports.

General Pharmaceutical Council

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has been the regulator for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy premises in England, Scotland and Wales since 27 September 2010. Its web site includes information, standards, guidance and links to legislation. There are searchable online registers of pharmacies, training premises, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The section "Raising concerns" includes determinations in fitness to practise hearings.

General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland

The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) was set up under the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998 as the self-regulating professional body for the teaching profession in Northern Ireland. It maintains a register of teachers in Northern Ireland which is searchable online. Documents on the site include the Code of Values and Professional Practice.

General Teaching Council for Scotland

The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) was set up under the Teaching Council (Scotland) Act 1965 as the regulatory body for the teaching profession in Scotland. It maintains a register, searchable online, of teachers who are eligible to teach in public sector schools in Scotland. Also on the site are details of the complaints procedure, and documents which include professional standards, rules, codes of practice and standing orders.

General Teaching Council for Wales

The General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) was set up under the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998 as the self-regulating professional body for the teaching profession in Wales. It maintains a register of qualified teachers in Wales which is searchable online. Site content also includes the Statement of Professional Values and Practice and other regulatory documents, information on GTCW's disciplinary procedures and rules, and brief details of recent disciplinary hearing outcomes.

Getting Your Get

The Hebrew word get signifies a divorce document according to Jewish law, and this site provides information about obtaining a get in England, Wales and Scotland. It is written by Sharon Faith and Deanna Levine, who are both solicitors experienced in matrimonial disputes. Besides the main article "Getting your Get" (currently 6th edition 2008), the site reproduces articles on the subject from the Family Law Journal, Scots Law Times and Journal of the Law Society of Scotland.

Gibraltar Public Services Ombudsman

The Public Services Ombudsman investigates complaints from the general public about acts of maladministration undertaken by government bodies or by providers of services appointed by the Government. Reports of complaints and their outcomes are posted on the web site. Annual reports, 1999/2000 onwards are also available. Full information is given on the role and procedures of the Ombudsman service.

Global Insolvency Law Database

The Global Insolvency Law Database (GILD) is the World Bank's legal portal for insolvency and creditor rights (ICR) matters. The database includes reports, articles, coverage of recent developments in ICR law, and the World Bank's principles and guidelines.

GlobaLex

GlobaLex provides online guides to international, foreign and comparative law research. The site's four sections are International Law Research (guides to over 25 topics), Comparative Law Research, Foreign Law Research (guides to over 100 countries), and Tools for Building Foreign, Comparative and International Law Collections. The guides include commentary, bibliographies and links to online resources, and are written by subject librarians and faculty staff from universities and other institutions from around the globe. The site is produced by the Hauser Global Law School Program (HGLSP) at the New York University School of Law.

Google Maps UK

Interactive online maps which can be manipulated by dragging, zooming and panning. Businesses and other locations, including for example courts, with their addresses, can be searched for within the selected area, and there is a facility for obtaining step-by-step directions between any two chosen points. Although the home page of this UK site is centred on the British Isles, detailed maps for much of the rest of the world are also accessible.

Google News UK

Google News UK collates articles from the last thirty days from more than 4,500 English language newspapers and other media sources worldwide. The headlines are selected by a computer algorithm without human editorial intervention. The stories are arranged such that one can easily see how various news services are treating each one.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a web search engine which enables users to search for scholarly literature. In November 2009 coverage was extended to include full text legal opinions from US federal and state district, appellate and supreme courts. To access this feature select the "Legal Documents" option on the home page.

Google UK

Google's quick and simple search engine is the most widely used in the western world. Select “Advanced search” from the results page for a template-based expert search including over 40 language options and the option of restricting the search to websites from a particular country or region. Many other Google services are accessible from the head of any page, including Google Maps and Google Scholar.

GOV.UK

GOV.UK will in due course provide a single consolidated domain for all UK government services and information. It was launched in October 2012, replacing the former Directgov and Business Link sites. The process of merging the content of all government departments and many other public bodies into the site began in November 2012 and is scheduled for completion by March 2014. Most of the site content is accessible via Departments, Topics, Policies and Documents, and there is a general section devoted to "How government works".

Govan Law Centre

Govan Law Centre, an independent, charitable, community-controlled law centre in Glasgow, provides a large-scale collection of legal articles, case comments and links. News is presented in the form of a blog going back to June 2009.

Govan Law Centre: Education Law Unit

Govan Law Centre's Education Law Unit is a legal resource aimed at anyone who advises either children with special educational needs or their parents in Scotland. The web site includes recent education and education law news, including details of recent cases, a variety of education law articles and Scottish Executive Education Department guidance documents, and information about the unit's work and services. There is also a link to the Additional Support Needs website, which deals with the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004.

Government Actuary's Department: Ogden Tables

The Actuarial Tables for Use in Personal Injury and Fatal Accident Cases, commonly known as the Ogden Tables, may be downloaded from this page of the Government Actuary's Department site. Besides the current 7th edition (2011), the 6th (2007), 5th (2004) and 4th (2000) are also available under the "Knowledge Centre" heading.

Government of Antigua & Barbuda: Laws Online

The web site of the Ministry of Legal Affairs contains the Revised Laws of Antigua and Barbuda, 1992 and annual laws 1993 onwards, all in pdf format. Selected Statutory Instruments 2006 onwards and Bills before Parliament are also available.

Government of Canada

The Government of Canada site provides links to all Canadian government department web sites and to the official web sites of the provinces and territories of Canada.

Government of Gibraltar

The official web site of the Gibraltar Government provides general introductory material relating to the administration of justice, constitutional history and the work of the various government departments. Legislation is provided via a link to Laws of Gibraltar (see below).

Government of Ireland

This site provides a portal for connection to a range of government departments and services, state agencies, local authorities and health bodies in Ireland. It includes a link to the public service information site Citizens Information.

Government of St Christopher & Nevis: Financial Services Regulatory Commission: Law Library

The Law Library section of this official St Kitts government web site contains current legislation relating to money laundering, companies, limited partnerships, financial services, foundations, anti-terrorism, trusts, merchant shipping and other areas.

Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Gazette

Hong Kong's official Gazette is published weekly and contains ordinances, regulations and bills as well as company winding-up and other notices. This web site makes available the full text, May 2000 onwards. Issues may be browsed by year/volume; or there is also a search facility.

Government Press, Sri Lanka

The web site of Sri Lanka's official printer and publisher contains Acts, 1999 onwards, Bills, 2003 onwards and the official Gazette 2004 onwards. Also available are forms, arranged by relevant government department. These do not include forms for use in litigation.

Government Whips Office

Web site of the Office of the Government Chief Whip (House of Lords), providing brief information on current and forthcoming business of the House of Lords. Part of the site is available only to Peers (upon registration).

GovPubs: the Australian Government Publications Guide

GovPubs is an initiative of NSLA (National and State Libraries Australasia). It provides descriptions of selected Australian official publications and enables the user to locate titles or series either in libraries (subdivided by state) or on the internet. Web publications may be browsed separately from printed ones.

Gray's Inn Tax Chambers

Gray's Inn Tax Chambers is a set of barristers' chambers specialising in revenue law. The site includes over 20 articles written by members of chambers, and digests of over 50 court and tribunal cases in which members have been involved, most of them with links to full transcripts.

Guardian

The Guardian newspaper carries news items and features on legal issues most days, although it no longer publishes law reports. The Law section of this online version is readily accessible via the News menu. The site's free archived content goes back to 1985, but coverage is selective before 1999. (There is also a subscription-based Digital Archive of the entire newspaper extending back to its foundation in 1821.)

Guardian: Freedom of Information

This is a section of the Guardian newspaper's web site which brings together its coverage of freedom of information (FOI) issues since May 1999. There is also information and guidance on various aspects of FOI, and a set of links, including to legislation.

Guernsey Bar

The Guernsey Bar web site provides information both on the profession of advocate in Guernsey and on Guernsey law generally. The latter includes: a brief history of Guernsey law; guides to civil, criminal and family procedure; a dictionary of legal terms; texts of selected laws; court rules; and articles. Judgments and some other material formerly on the site are now on the Guernsey Legal Resources site.

Guernsey Financial Services Commission

The Guernsey Financial Services Commission is the regulatory body for the finance sector in Guernsey. The site includes links to texts of relevant legislation, instructions, rules, codes, guidance and other documents.

Guernsey Legal Resources

This site, a joint initiative of the Royal Court of Guernsey and Guernsey's Law Officers of the Crown, provides a comprehensive collection and database of Guernsey's recent legal material. Content at present (coverage will continue to expand) includes Laws (Orders in Council) 1950 onwards, and some key earlier items; Ordinances 1950 onwards, and some key earlier items; Statutory Instruments 1949 onwards; unofficial consolidated versions of Laws 1950 onwards and Ordinances 1950 onwards; UK Statutory Instruments 1980 onwards; Orders of the Royal Court 1949 onwards; Practice Directions of the Royal Court 2000 onwards; unreported judgments of the Guernsey courts 2004 onwards and of the Court of Appeal 1964-1989 (for access to these registration is required); Guernsey Law Reports 2003 onwards; the Guernsey Law Journal 1985-2000 (including the text of Court of Appeal judgments 1989-2000); and a link to the Jersey and Guernsey Law Review on the Jerseylaw.je site.

Guernsey Registry

The Guernsey Registry holds information on all companies registered in Guernsey. Information and guidance on its web site includes links to laws and regulations relating to companies and limited partnerships on the Guernsey Legal Resources site.

Guide to Caribbean Law Research

A narrative account of Caribbean legal systems and legal research, with hypertext links to the sources mentioned, is provided here on the GlobaLex web site. The author is Yemisi Dina, Head of Public Services at Osgoode Hall Law Library, York University, Toronto. This updated version was published January/February 2010.

This pdf document, made available in the Guidance section of the Justice portal site, provides guidance to solicitors and counsel in the preparation of proceedings in the Court of Appeal Criminal Division.

Guide to Indian Laws

Written by V. Ramakrishnan, a lawyer practising in Chennai (Madras), this Guide covers in some depth the constitutional and legal history of India as well as the present-day legal system and institutions, concluding with a bibliography of the major texts on various aspects of Indian law. This updated version was published on the GlobaLex site January 2006.

Guide to International Refugee Law Resources on the Web

A research guide on LLRX.com by Elisa Mason directing readers to some of the key texts and resources available on the web that can help shed light on, and provide context for, many of the issues currently being deliberated in the refugee law arena. The guide, updated to July 2009, covers international and regional instruments, human rights and humanitarian law, international bodies, national legislation, case law and periodicals.

Guide to Irish Law

This overview of Irish law written by Dr Darius Whelan, a lecturer in law at University College, Cork, was first published on LLRX.com in August 2001 and updated on GlobaLex in June 2005 and in October 2010. It covers the development of the legal system in the Republic of Ireland and the Irish Constitution of 1937 and describes online sources for primary and secondary legislation, courts and case law, government departments, the legal professions and university law departments. It also includes bibliographic details of significant books and journals.

Guide to Nigerian Legal Information

Written by Yemisi Dina, John Akintayo and Funke Ekundayo, this GlobaLex guide (updated version published January/February 2010) covers the Nigerian legal system, government bodies and agencies, primary and secondary sources, legal education and legal profession. Links to web resources are provided where possible.

Guide to Nigerian Legal Materials on the Web

Originally written by Tzi Yong Sam Sim, this introduction to the sources of law and legal system in Singapore provides, available on the GlobaLex web site, provides links to the online sources mentioned. An updated version of the guide, by Arundhati Ashok Satkalmi, was published July 2008, and the latest update is by Charlotte Gill and dated January 2013.

Guide to the US Federal Legal System

A research guide on the GlobaLex web site, outlining the structure of the federal legal system including references to publicly accessible web-based sources, prepared by Gretchen Feltes, Faculty Services/Reference Librarian at New York University School of Law Library. Originally (2003) on the LLRX.com site, the guide was published on GlobaLex in 2005 and has since been updated several times.
